around town

by frog_duh Online Now Mar 27, 2008 at 2:26 AM

we'll probably spend the morning that we arrive in siem reap exploring the town... anything in particular to look for (museums, exhibits, interesting buildings...)? guess we'll check out the markets, and a stroll along the river... or are we better off spending half a day at the angkor temples or a day trip? also, is there any dress-code for the angkor temples? (eg: not bare shoulder/shorts, kind of like the churches in europe?) hope to gather some last minute tips before my trip this sunday! *excited!!* thanks all!!

Siem Reap is a very charming town. You can just explore the town walking down the streets. There is a museum in Siem Reap but we gave it a miss during my trip. However, at this time of the year, Siem Reap is going to be scorching hot so I am not sure how much of walking during the day would you want to do. There is no dress code in these temples. I walked around in shorts during the entire trip and many people were in similar clothes. So Have fun and have a wonderful trip!

Hi! Here's hoping you have a great trip. You might want to take advantage of the 'free' late pass and get a sunset in (not sure how long you have to visit the temples). If you go out to the temples after around 4:30pm - you do not need to buy your pass for the day but can get it to start officially the following day. With regards to dress code, I didn't see it heavily enforced, but you are right, no bare shoulders or shorts - and the guards DO have the right to enforce it. If nothing else, you are being respectful towards another culture's religion. You could take a sarong to cover shoulders when inside the temples (or to cover your legs).

it is better to spend the first day exploring the town of siem reap. there is a new museum which is privately owned and has a hefty entrance fee. there is a mines museum which is very informative, they have moved to a new site. dont confuse it with war museum . lots of places to eat, have coffee. agree with the other poster to go in the evening so that you get the entrance to the temples free that evening.. and go for the sunset.. on a recent visit i couldnt believe how crowded the sunset view area was .. but without going to the temples there is another hill where you could view the sunset over the lake tonle sap.. recommend angkor palms restaurant for khmer food, avoid high priced french restaurants not worth it, a nice little japanese restaurant if you like japanese food, a burmese restaurant called amarapura or at mandalay inn .. lots and lots to do and it is a charming town..

I would highly recommend taking more than one day at the temples. At the very least get the three day pass. They are amazing. At the temples you will see people dressed all different ways and we never saw signs or instructions on a dress code but one person asked my boyfriend to have me cover my shoulders so we bought a scarf to cover them (I was in a tank top like many of the tourists).

I agree that you should consider allocating enough time to get a 3 day pass to Angkor Wat. We've done this twice, and not ever felt templed out! There are so many things to see and explore in the massive complex. And, one of the highlights is definitely catching a sunset and a sunrise at the temples. I've been slack and not put up photographs of either, but there are plenty on here to allure you. I love walking, and loved wandering around Siem Reap in the mornings, watching people go about their business. There are the few museums to visit, and the markets, but a lot of the enjoyment comes from just the meandering wandering for me.
