Safety of a flight stopover in Khartoum?

by ari1974 Online Now Mar 27, 2012 at 2:58 PM

Our current best route from Kilimanjaro, Tanzania to Los Angeles has a stop in Khartoum. I've read that the current airport in Khartoum has a pretty poor safety record, in addition to the existing state department warnings about the Sudan. Anyone have any recent experience stopping over in Khartoum? We wouldn't actually disembark. Any insight into the safety level of the airport? There was mention of an updated airport opening in 2012, but I can't find any information on whether and when that is actually going to happen. Higher level, are we missing an option in terms of getting from Kilimanjaro back to Los Angeles? I've gone through the various flight searches, and it looks like for the dates we selected that is the only timeline that will work out.

Landing in Khartoum should be no problem as long as you take a reputable airline. Most of the travel warnings concern the use of Sudanese flight companies which - together with those of DRC and Angola - have the worst reputation of the continent. One thing that cannot be avoided no matter which airline you take is the poor state of ground control in many countries, Sudan being among them. Pilots have more or less to rely on their own skills and communication with other flights in the same region. But then, those who fly across Africa on a daily base, know their jobs, so I wouldn´t be overly worried in your case.
