Visiting with young kids

I have never been to Key West and I am thinking of bringing my two young children, 4 and 7, to see the Everglades over Xmas. Is Key West the right place to stay for 5 days? Or is Key Largo better? Which hotels are best for couple with young kids? Your help will be most helpful. Thanks.
