Shots for Kenya...

by luddinra Online Now Jul 1, 2005 at 9:10 AM

Hey there! What kind of safari are you doing anyway? We will be leaving on Sept 20th for 2 weeks to Kenya! I was going to ask folks about vaccines as well. You are REALLY waiting til the last minute though! Meninggitis is only if plan to visit the western half of Ethiopia from December through June. And as for Rabies...it says this is if you might be exposed to wild or domestic animals through work or recreation. I don't think I'll be getting that one. You can always get it after the fact, right? For us, I think we will be getting: Hepatitis A Yellow Fever Typhoid Polio (unless I find out from my mom that I've already had this) Plus the malaria pills that you have to get a perscription from the dr for. I got all this info from http://www.cdc.gov/travel/eafrica.htm This is going to cost us 300.00 bucks each!!!! Anyone have any words of wisdom as to if I should definitly get other shots...find a better price that the county (I called EVERYONE!)...ect...???

Your vaccine list looks good, but I think it may be more along the lines of500.00. You shouldn't need meningitis or rabies shots. The typhoid is oral, and you need 6 days to take it (evert other day for 3 pills). I am assuming that you have had the Hep B series of shots???? If not- you should get them also!! The yellow fever has to be given at least 10 days before travel (to be effective or have them accept that the vaccine has "taken") Have a great trip!!!
