Any local pubs around docks recommended before paying the steep cruise prices on ship :-) Any real local places to see?, thanks

      Taxi/Driver to Southampton?

Tunbridge Wells Apr 9, 2013 at 3:28 PM

Hi,  We're staying in Tunbridge Wells for 4 days before a cruise on June 8th and wondered how to get from TW to Southampton on June 7th.  Public transport is not easy, and I cannot seem to find a reliable private transfer company or taxi.  I must be searching incorrectly.  Thanks in advance...

    • Moving to Canterbury, never been-any feedback on the place?

      Canterbury Mar 15, 2013 at 5:16 PM

I am moving to Canterbury for a temporary job and would like to know any pros and cons about the place before I go. Any factual information will help a great deal, personal experience and personal opinions of the place would help also. Any feedback about the schools, the transportation, places to go, safety of the town, etc. would be much appreciated.

We don't drive, must rely upon minivan tours or somesuch. Also posting in London thread, since we can take a train from London or start our tour from there.

      Canterbury Sep 4, 2012 at 12:02 AM

Hi, We'll be staying in Canterbury for 2 days, and since the coast is so close we'd like to take a Stagecoast bus to one of the nearby beach towns. Which is prettiest/most scenic or most worth visiting, in your opinion? Some options are Herne Bay, Whitstaple, Ramsgate, and Broadstairs. From Broadstairs is it easy to get to the beach with white cliffs? Thank you for your help. Cathy

I arrive at Gatwick in July at about 9pm. I was going to be staying with a friend in Clapham, so transport was easy. My friend has just sold his house and will have moved to Sevenoaks by July. What is the best way to reach Sevenoaks from Gatwick? Minicab or is there a train?

    • Dover to Calais

      Dover Sep 2, 2011 at 12:27 AM

Hi I am going to be travelling from dover to calais in about 2 weeks by car. I will be travelling with my cousin and my 2 and a half month baby. I would just like to know what the check in procedures are at dover before boarding and in calais when getting off the boat. As i am travelling with a baby would just like to make it as easy as possible. The car will be rammed with all my baby stuff, so does anyone know if they stop all cars and search. Its been a while since i travelled by ferry so am not sure whether procedures have changed or not. I know security procedures and everything are tighter now adays. Any help from fellow parents on the procedures of checking in would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    • Dover Taxi availability

      Dover Jul 8, 2011 at 10:10 AM

We will be in Dover for an overnight stay and have reservations at La Scala restaurant which appears to be in the city. Our hotel is ~1 mile away and we plan to take a taxi from the restaurant to the hotel. First, how safe is that area around the restaurant? Next, and more importantly, how readily available are Taxi's @ ~ 8-9PM when we should be concluding dinner? If anyone has any suggestions about booking a taxi or whether they should be easily/readily available by the restaurant...it would be appreciated. Thank you in advance to anyone who replies...

      Ferry from Dover to Calais/Dunkirk

      Dover Jul 8, 2011 at 5:40 AM

Hi, We're going to be driving down a car from UK across Europe to Malta and we're going to be on a tight schedule. I've found all the details of the ferries that cross from Dover to Calais or Dunkirk. However, I'm wondering if it's better to book online or you can just get there and get a ticket from there? It will be for 2 passengers and a car. I know that the common reasoning is that if we're on a tight schedule we should book online to make sure we get on - but my worry is that we might arrive too late (or too early) and then won't be able to change the ticket. Any advice? Also, I've read you need to be there a certain amount of time before hand to check-in. How much before? We're currently trying to decide between P&O (to Calais) or Norfolk Lines (to Dunkirk)....or if it pays us (time wise) the eurotunnel. We would be travelling on a Friday (15th July) so I don't know if there would be any weekend rush or something that would cause delays. Also, we would be driving down from Newark to Dover - and calculated about 3.5hrs... is this reasonable? Thanks to anyone who can help!!!

      Train from London to Dover

      Dover Apr 25, 2011 at 1:14 AM

When I am in London next month I thought I would take a day trip to Dover (to visit the Castle). Easy, or so I thought. I used google and clicked on both the Trainline and Southern Railways website. So far, so good. Except..... a) which station do I start out from? b) which station do I want to arrive at for accessing the Castle - Priory or Court? Seems a very expensive trip - £32 odd return. Bus I gather is cheaper but takes longer? Is the bus arrival point any more convenient for my ultimate goal?

    • Canterbury Cathedral in one afternoon???

      Canterbury Apr 1, 2011 at 10:33 AM

First, I would like to thank anyone who responds to this question. My wife and I will be departing Dover for a cruise in July and are arriving one day early. We plan to rent a car and go to Canterbury to see the Cathedral leaving in the early afternoon. I went on the Cathedral website to see about purchasing tix in advance and, it seems, that can't be done. Now my question: With only a half day to work with, can anyone provide me with some basic information re: parking, entrance to the Cathedral, events (Evening Song?) and any suggestions for a nice pub/restaurant for dinner prior to our return to Dover? Again, thank you in advance to anyone who provides some insights/opinions/suggestions, etc.

      Dover Feb 7, 2011 at 1:23 PM

I need advise on traveling from the cruise terminal in Dover to Paris. I think the P&O ferry will suite my needs. It was the only one online that let me enter a quote for a foot traveler. I think there is a shuttle from the cruise ship to the train station. Do I need to go there to get to the Eastern Docks?

      Gardens of Kent

      Kent Jan 11, 2011 at 7:01 PM

My husband and I are planning a visit to Kent for several days to tour the lovely gardens in early June. Which would you recommend as "must sees?" What would be a centrally located village or town for us to stay? Would we be able to hire a driver/guide to bring us to the various sites? Is there public transportation from these villages to gardens such as Sissinghurst?

Ashford, canterbury or London? Or suiggestions please

      Canterbury Sep 2, 2010 at 7:32 AM

We are visisting a relative at Uni in Canterbury, travelling down from Yorkshire early on the Saturday morning. We will be finished with our visit at about 3-4pm. We can't decide whether to stay overnight in Canterbury (all the hotels have mixed reviews :( )or whether to go back up into London (we have rail tickets to return home from London to Yorkshire at 8.30 sun eve). Or we wondered if Ashford was a nice place to stay? I dont know the area at all and can only find Ashford as a station that the Canterbury to London train stops at. As an aside, we have pre-booked rail tickets for £24 each (single) from Wakefield to Canterbury. We have checked the websites for the fares into London and its about £25 each one way!!!! What a rip off.

    • Seaweed at broadstairs clean?

      Broadstairs Aug 6, 2010 at 4:17 AM

Hello I recently visited broadstairs beach with my family, and whilst there I collected some seaweed (just a small personal quantity) from out on the rocks. Mostly serrated wrack, and some sea lettuce. I was wondering if this is considered safe to eat i.e. is broadstairs clean enough, or are there any sewage outlets, or the density of human visitors causing polluted environment nearby. I just want to know if the seaweed is considered contaminated or polluted? CHeers

      Broadstairs Aug 3, 2010 at 2:52 AM

I recently went to Broadstairs with my 2 small daughters 3 and 5, and we were hoping to see the donkeys at Viking bay. We did not see any. Are their still donkeys on Viking bay? Also, we went on to Ramsgate and when we asked if the model village was still there, we were told that it was not. Is that true? I spent a great deal of my childhood in Ramsgate and Broadstairs, and wanted to relive it with my daughters. Thanks, Jacalyn Oghan
