by Andtrevmommy Online Now Jun 14, 2010 at 10:09 AM

First time to Kauai. We are staying at the Marriott in Lihue. Are kids are boy 15, boy 12 and girl 3. We love the water and hope to do an intro scuba and snorkel. I plan on some childcare for my little girl. However, hoping to get ideas of what we should do and can do all together. Any Free ideas? We love, love activity. Thanks for any advice. Kimberly

Kauai is a beautiful island and also peaceful. Not a whole lot of activities unless you spend some money for the activities. However, the snorkeling is a blast. The north shore at the furthest end you can go, at Tunnels beach, the water is very calm. You can also go hiking right there as well. Usually, kids are content being at the beach, shelling and going into the water. One of my co-workers is in Kauai this week. Told her to have a burger at Duanes Ono Burger, supposed to be the best. The Waimea Canyon is beautiful to see but other than packing a picnic, not much to do. Hopefully the Marriott will have activities for kids would be your best best.

With your 3-year old: Do a day trip to Waimea Canyon and Kalalau Lookout for some of the best scenery and views in the USA. Without your 3-year old: Vist the Napali Coast. You have two options: hike the trail along the cliffs or go on a zodiac boat tour.

There's a lot to do on Kauai. A basic guidbook will tell plenty. Hanalei on the north shore is a fine place to stop with a pretty good swimming beach. There are surf lessons available if the boys are interested. At the end of the road, at the last beach, there is a trailhead up the Napili coast. You can go for as far as you want, and there are great views all the way. Very near Lihue there is an easy walk to a beautiful waterfall where the adventurous go swimming. I don't recall the directions, but I've got it written in a tip on my VT page. Swimming on the south shore, around Poipu, is great. There are some more extensive beaches further west toward the canyon.
