    • trekking to everest base camp immediately..with no plan!?!?

      Nepal May 15, 2013 at 1:30 AM

i have recently been engaged in the thought of trekking to everest base camp. i have, however, no plan..excpt to book a flight to kathmandu and plan from there. i was wondering if this is do-able, especially at this time of year with the rainy season looming, and my arrival being around the 20th of may. i understand the trek to ebc takes about 17 days with a guided tour and can be fairly expensive.. is it possible to do a trek on my own or in a small group or with a private guide? andi what might that cost? i understand its possible to get all the gear i might need for under $200, but am unsure of total travelling time and cost of food and accomodation, and how the trip could be organized. its my birthday in a week and can think of no more beautiful way of spending it than on a trek to everest, any info is much appreciated! thanks :)

    • Short Namche Bazaar region trek limited days

      Nepal May 10, 2013 at 5:34 PM

Hello. I am looking for feedback on the feasibility of several short trekking options in Nepal in mid-November 2013.

My wife and I (around 30 years old, and expect to be relatively fit in November), have five trekking days in Nepal. We are contemplating several options below and are interested in how challenging the routes are in the time we propose, and how magnificent the the routes are for scenery and landscape.

For some context, we will have spent 9 days in Tibet, before driving to Kathmandu and then flying into Lukla the next day to start the trek. So we should have decent acclimatisation already (sleeping between 3500 - 4900 metres In Tibet).

Option A: Day 1 - (from Kathmandu fly to) Lukla to overnight Monjo; Day 2 - Monjo to Namche Bazaar to o/n Mong; Day 3 - Mong to o/n Luza; Day 4 - Luza through the mountains to o/n Phurte or Namche Bazaar; Day 5 - return to o/n Lukla (fly out next morning)

Option B: Day 1 - (from Kathmandu fly to) Lukla to o/n Monjo; Day 2 - Monjo to o/n Namche Bazaar area; Day 3 - Namche Bazaar to o/n Thame; Day 4 Thame mountain route through Kongde and o/n Longde or Toktok; Day 5 - return to o/n Lukla (fly out next morning)

Option C: Day 1 - (from Kathmandu fly to) Lukla to Phakding; Day 2 - Phakding to Namche Bazaar; Day 3 and 4 - chill out around Namche Bazaar; Day 5 - return to o/n Lukla (fly out next morning)

Any feedback would be appreciated =)

I will be staying there for 3 months so I searched for an apartment to rent, and have found a seemingly good one bedroom apartment for about350 a month at this website: http://www.apartment-kathmandu.com/ I wanted to make sure it's a reliable and honest business but couldn't find any reviews on the web. It's not even listed in Nepal Yellow Pages! How can I check it's not a scam? Thanks!

iPhone 4 mini SIM available in Nepal?

by leon.partsi Online Now Jan 18, 2012 at 6:45 PM

Hi Everyone, I will be heading off on a 19-day trek starting in Kathmandu on February 14th. Background: I've got an unlocked iPhone 4G and while I am not going to make many calls, I would like to be able to use data - especially GPS and social networking (facebook). International Roaming by my own service provider is possible, but they charge insane amounts and I would rather not. So, my questions are: 1. It is easy to arrive in Nepal and get a local prepaid mini-SIM? 2. Does the Everest Base Camp Trek have a good deal of coverage? Thanks in advance, Leon

by geminimoai Online Now Dec 30, 2011 at 4:49 PM

Has anyone passed through the the Kathmandu Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport in the past few weeks? Practically everything I've read about it makes it sound like a nightmare (e.g. long queues, disorganized, unhelpful staff, lack of info) Should I get to the airport 3 hours before my flight just to be safe? Also, I heard that a tourist visa isn't necessary if you're staying in Nepal for 3 days or less. I will be in Kathmandu for 2 days, leaving for India, and then coming back to Kath. for 2 more days before returning home. Can I get in free both times? Is there a separate line to wait in for this, or do I wait in the no visa line? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I've heard you can get better deals walking up to the reception in Thamel hotels instead of booking online. Anyone know if that's true? Also, any suggestions for clean hotels in Thamel (or on the edges of Thamel) would be appreciated. The top range of my bedget is USD 50, though I'd prefer not to pay more than USD 30 a night.
