I am planning to spend 2 months in karakol this summer...but i after some scary reviews over there...i feel like i am visiting hell..and not a tourist destination..i prefer night life..but i can go to discos now fearing that i ll get beaten up.
Don't go out at night and you'll be fine. If you have Kyrgyz friends have them go with you if you're out in the dark. Even groups of foreigners have been attacked so be very careful. You're right, Karakol is not safe after dark.

Don't worry if you are not alone everything will be ok. Every country has this problem where the poorest strata there is a criminality. Even in Sweden visit for example Rinkiby it is a micro district of Stockholm and you can get yourself into trouble.
