Two Weeks in Zurich and Lucerne

by beejay421 Online Now Feb 2, 2013 at 6:09 PM

We are planning to spend two weeks in Switzerland in early June before we leave for Italy--one week in Zurich and the other in Lucerne. Will we be able to explore the high Alps from these two locations or would we be better to stay in other areas that would have major transportation connections for day trips as we will be using public transportation. We were hoping to stay in the Old Town of Zurich in an apartment or efficiency for one week and then move to Lucerne for the second week. Would appreciate any help before we purchase our plane tickets to Zurich.

If you're primarily interested in the high alps, there's no real reason to stay in Zurich. It's a fine city, but quite expensive and relatively distant from the Alps. You can get from Zurich Airport to Lucerne in just over an hour, with a single change at Zurich HB (main train station). Either stay in Lucerne for two weeks and day-trip to various alpine locations (such as Engelberg and the Jungfrau region), or consider a second location deeper in the mountains, such as Lauterbrunnen, Samedan, or even Lugano. Check out VT's various Switzerland travel guides for ideas.

Hi, I am living in Zürich and I know Lucerne very well. I would agree with travelfrosch that spending one week in Zürich and one in Lucerne is a waste of your time.
Zürich - Lucerne is one hour by train.
If you stay for one week in Lucerne, you can easily visits from there:
    - Basel
    - Berne
    - Zürich
    - Lucerne - Riggi (2000 meters)
    - Lucerne - Pilatus (2000 meters)
    - Lucerne - Titlis Rotair (3000 meters)

If you want to split, spend a week in Lucerne and one in Geneva or Lucerne and Interlaken
Do you want to stay over at a mountain hotel?
Or spend a few days in a mountain village?
Zürich would be a great location, if you also want to visit some place in Germany like
    Lake Constance, Rhinefalls, Island Mainau
