does anyone know or have ever taken a hire car from the mainland onto Kangaroo Island?
Hi! Do you mean is it allowed or how to do it? If the latter, I can help you

I have a travelogue on planning road trip on Kangaroo island at - "Planning A Road trip to Kangaroo Island" - Kangaroo Island Travelogue by pedroswift I checked a couple of hire car companies before I went and ended up hiring "on island" because most of them did not allow cars to be taken to KI or limited road use to sealed roads only. Even the on-island hire companies have strict conditions.

Further: welcome to vt , by the way. If not familiar, to open the link to my travelogue Cut and Paste the url. Visiting KI is not as simple as one might think given the hire car ban on driving between sunset and sunrise.....can affect your plans if ferry arrives after sunset (or just before sunset).

Seems it is quite common for rental car companies to ban taking their cars on ferries. Here's the info from a booking confirmation that I've received from Budget Rent a Car: Area of use Restrictions Restrictions may apply if you intend to take the vehicle outside the local area in which it is being collected. If you intend to do so, you must contact the pick up location prior to the rental for advice on availability or restrictions that may apply for this rental. In Western Australia and the Northern Territory the use of vehicles in certain areas is restricted to commercial 4WD vehicles only, please contact your rental location for more information. Vehicles are not to be taken off the Mainland of Australia unless connected by bridge (for example, travel between Brisbane and Stradbroke Island or Melbourne and Devonport is prohibited). Ends So although it does not specifically mention KI, Melb to Devenport is a major route compared to KI. I'm wanting to do a trip to Tasmania and specifically Bruny Island where a relative has just moved to and the rules for off the 'mainland' of Tasmania apply to going on the 15 minute ferry to Bruny. Good luck and hope you can find something to suit you.

Another item to consider - I rang Budget Rental because the trip I'm doing next month is in a remote area and roads are not necessarily all sealed. I was told that if a road appears on a map, then you are covered for insurance purposes in a 2WD vehicle. I don't know if the same rule applies for a 4WD vehicle.

I've found that with 4WDs you can only take them on unsealed roads that have been graded. But insurance doesn't cover water damage, damage to the underneath of the vehicle or to the top of the vehicle. Then they also have a list of unsealed roads in Australia where you aren't allowed to drive the hired 4WD regardless of whether the road is graded or not.
