      Elephant Santuary??? HELP!

Chiang Mai Jul 11, 2015 at 2:20 AM

Hi, I am in Chiang Mai from 13th-16th July and planned to do an Elephant sanctuary but the one that came highly recommended is full booked! It was supposed to be the Elephant Nature Park.

Can anyone recommend an alternative that is ethical?

      It's for 2 adults and 2 teens.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

    • Are the no shoes requirements strict in ALL Chiang Mai temples?

Chiang Mai Jul 12, 2015 at 4:00 AM

Have polio and wear a knee to foot orthotic. Can remove it at home on dead level carpeted floors, but the slightest uneven surface (even the garden), brings about falls and great difficulty walking. Not so good at over 60. Am wondering if there are any temples in Chiang Mai who relax the strict no shoes rule for the disabled? For instance, was overwhelmed in India, where often accommodation was made for disability by squares of white cotton cloths being produced to wrap and tie around the shoes if unable to remove them.

      What to do - Recommendations!

Chiang Mai Jul 11, 2015 at 2:51 AM

We have 3.5 days in Chiang Mai between Krabi and Phuket - what do you suggest for things to do?

I really want to do an elephant sanctuary (ethical, non mahout type) and have another post for this as the one I wanted to do is fully booked.

Other than this we are obviously going to do the night markets - any suggestions on how and where to go as I know nothing other than there's night markets to visit!

I have read a little about some water falls - this seems interesting but we cannot do too much physical activity. We did Tiger Temple yesterday in Krabi and I only made it half way. I am in the middle of my weight loss journey and have lost 5.5 stone but still not physically fit enough for major activities - but I'm 100 times better that I was at the start so I'm OK with this! If we could swim near water falls etc, this would be great - we have 2 teenage boys with us!

I have heard mixed reviews on the hill tribe, some say very good, others say way too commercialised?
We like Temples etc but we are doing Bangkok and Ayutthaya so many suggest that this will be more than enough temples!

Anyway, any other suggestions would be good!

      Anything to do?

by sclub Online Now Aug 6, 2006 at 4:18 AM

Temples aside is there really anything to do in this town. i was due to stay there for 4 days but left after just 23 hours!! I am thinking about retiring in a nice little thai town where maybe i could learn more about thai tradition and speak their language, but the town seems so dead.
i have some land there so i will perservere, but need to know about any ex-pats living in that area.
