Hello, I'm possibly attending TRU this September for 2 years (grad studies). I'd like to hear some input about what Kamloops and the area are like, just general thoughts, things to do, recommendations, anything really. It's tough making such a big decision from across the country. I wish I could visit first, but that's not a possibility. So far I've heard all good things about how beautiful the region is. Many thanks :)
I like the small town feel in Kamloops. With small towns though you get the small town prejudices and biases. The winter is great for snow sports and the summer is great on the river, lakes and horseback. Country music is still tops but I am sure a younger generation still has its preferences.

Not too far from the beautiful Okanagan Region; also north, there's the fantastic Wells Gray Park http://www.wellsgray.ca/ It's a five hour drive to Vancouver from Kamloops, and the scenic Shuswap area is about 40 minutes east. The national mountain parks start a couple of hours east, starting with Mount Revelstoke National Park. Like Griff said, there's a small towny feeling to it, so it's not a place for excitement. They do have a major mall and the usual Canadian franchises such as Chapters, etc.

Kamloops is great---has most of the amenities of a larger city (things like Tim Hortons) and doesn't have the gridlock traffic. It's a nice friendly city. If you enjoy the outdoors, it's great for both any summer or winter sport you can think of. Great ski area (Sun Peaks) less then an hour from Kamloops. It's a beautiful location with the dry desert mountains surrounding the city and the Thompson River running through the valley. I've spent a lot of time in Kamloops (have family there) and think it's a great place to live.

Coming from Ontario, you'll probably enjoy the hills of sagebrush and the dry desert-like environment... ... in the summer, of course. ;)
