Kaiserslautern/Mannheim/Heidelberg/Other for World Cup Stay?

by jasmac Online Now Apr 13, 2006 at 10:25 AM

Hi,
a few questions, if you can help. Myself and two friends have tickets for Spain v Saudia Arabia. KL seems a smallish city so we are worried pubs, clubs, disco, etc may be too busy to be enjoyed (and possibly trouble?). Mannheim seems quite industrial, so maybe too dull? Heidelberg more of interest, brighter, but is further to travel from Frankfurt hahn airport and KL.
Accommodation in KL seems hard to find.
Where would you recommend for three fun lovin' guys to have two great nights (and days) out?? Where has best bars, clubs, entertainments?
I need your help fast! Maybe you can be our guide when we get there? maybe you can buy all the drinks too? Just joking!
Many thanks,
Jimmy, from Bonnie Scotland?!

    Kaiserslautern ~ 100.000 inhabitants

Accommodation is indeed a problem. The other host cities are either much bigger or part of big conurbation (i.e. you can stay in nearby cities). Kaiserslautern is located however in one of the biggest forests in Germany. Nice - but not if you look for accommodation.

Unlikely. Typically the fans concentrate on the central areas of the venue cities. Besides the fans directly staying in K'town there are few which will commute into the city centre for the nightlife. From where? Thus the relation "available capacity" to "number of fans in commuting range" will be better than at many other places.

    Mannheim 325.000 inhabitants
Ludwigshafen 164.000 inhabitants (just seperated by the Rhine from Mannheim)
Heidelberg 143.000 inhabitants (14-18 min by S-Bahn or RE trains)

Mannheim is quite OK. And offers the best nightlife, biggest, most central city. Has also places like the opera, the SAP-Arena etc.
Ludwigshafen is the most industrial city and can be called quite dull. But if you can find there cheap accommodation - it's close to Mannheim.
In Mannheim the German team has the last test match before the World Cup.
There are a number of public viewing sites and other World Cup related events.

Heidelberg is well known abroad. Thus many may like to stay there. Heidelberg is mainly an academic (even if Mannheim as nearly as many students) city and tourism is also important. It's rather a prototype of a "anti-football" city. 100% contrast to Kaiserlautern. Only through private in initiatives there are also some public viewing possibilities.

The main one in Halle 02 is stil uncertain. They have to renovate their roof. Planned to be finished till Mid June - but that's not for sure.

As all these cities are connected by S-Bahn to Kaiserslautern. And all are inside the VRN, thus your entrance ticket to the match covers the trip to Kaiserslautern and back.

If it comes to pubs: Speyer has the highest density of pubs and restaurants per inhabitant in Germany
And Speyer has also more to offer

    Hi,
would also prefer Mannheim. It's not so dull as it may look.
There are a few nice pubs, but Mannheim is not my district. Cheap and good asien food You will find Q 3/Q4, a nice Café-Pub is near the Reiss-Museum at E5.
Annother choice for You could be Karlsruhe. Also a nice town, a few things to look, nice pubs and a lot of students. And - when I'm in town, the chance for a drink in the beergarden.
    have fun
    Gar
