Salmon fishing

by Monoma Online Now May 31, 2005 at 6:22 PM

Will be in Juneau for part of July. Am novice and want to go for a half-day salmon fishing trip. Any suggestions? Also someone said you could fish for free near the hatchery, is that true and how? Thanks

Yes, this is true...it is ALMOST fishing for free, but you'd better buy a fishing license which isn't cheap for non-residents. You will see folks near the hatchery fishing away. Also down on the beach near Thane. The fish will be a little watermarked, but if you have them smoked they'll still taste just fine. There are a couple of places that will custom-pack your fish if you want to take them home with you. My son worked as a crew person for one of the many salmon charter boats. I know they charge an arm and a leg for even a half day, and are notorious for their signs "A whale can tip this boat but only YOU can tip the crew." Then the stingy captains SPLIT the tip money with the crew. Always carry a couple of10 bills that you can personally palm off to the crew, if you feel they've done a good job cleaning your fish, etc. You can also fish further out the road along several streams, but watch out for bears!
