Can anyone tell me what the weather is usually like in May. I travel light so I was only going to take one fleece jumper and a waterproof jacket. Should I take another fleece jacket for the nights too? I'll be doing some camping. I have a 3 season sleeping bag and planned to sleep in tracksuit trousers and a long sleeved t-shirt. hould I bring a thermal vest too? I feel the cold easily. I'm from the UK though so I am used to cold, cold weather.
You can see for yourself at wunderground.com. Enter your city, click, and then halfway down the page on the left hand side you will see a box with the heading "History and Almanac" you can check on the weather conditions on any given date for several years in the past to get an idea.

wordtravels.com/Cities/South... will give you climate graphs per month. Looks v similar to UK night summer temperatures, so you'll poss need the fleece but prob not the thermals.

I live in Johannesburg. It will be very cold in May. Jhb is at high altitude. The wind chill factor in winter also adds to the almost freezing conditions. You will need warm clothing, even some thermal vests.

the short answer is yes - take the extra thermal and fleece if you're staying in Jo'Burg or the surrounds. It gets very very cold in the Highveld!

Hi My mantra is, "TNever travel without your thermals! They are light, versatile, and pack down into virtually no space, as well as being additional pyjamas or T shirts in case of emergency. We were camping just north of Jo'burg this weekend, and it's already cool at night. The trick with the interior of South Africa in winter is to bring layers which you can add or discard as the need arises. The days are lovely and pretty close to a British summer, so you don't want to be burdened with excessively heavy clothing. It's the start of our dry season, so you don't need to worry about rain.
