...seems to be quite difficult, if it's not with an own or rental car. So my question is, if it is possible to plan a journey with Metrobus in advance. Their site http://www.mbus.co.za offers a 98-page route list from September 2006, but I haven't found a route map. I am interested in going from Lelville to Gold Reef City, but perhaps I will use Metrobus also on further ocassions. Has anybody some experiences with Metrobus to share or would you rather recommend me to rely on Taxis? Thanks for your help Karl
My advice to you would be to obtain a detailed route map to the places you want to visit. Once you have the routes, then hire a car. The metro busses are not safe ,nor are they on time and they are packed to capacity and sometimes even over loaded. Perhaps you can buy a street map of Johannesburg and study it before your trip. The taxis in use in South Africa are mini busses and the drivers are renowned for reckless driving. Not a safe option if you want peace of mind. A passenger rental car should cost about 30 to 35 euro`s per day, from companies such as Avis,Budget,Hertz. Heinrich

Heinrich, not all taxis are mini-busses - there are sedan taxis with meters as well.

I think it's Melville you are talking about and I doubt if there is a bus going to Gold Reef city from there. There are half day tours available but they are quite expensive.

First, thanks to all of you for your replies. I am still making up my mind on what to do there. I am not very happy with the idea on driving on the left side in a country with a somewhat extroverted driving style :) Organized tours are also a less favorized option, but I may think about that, if I don't get anything else up to then. Perhaps we'll organize a taxi which brings us there and picks us up after our visit. Oh yes, I was talking about Melville (that's what happen when you type faster thank you can think...). I don't think their are direct buses to Gold Reef city either, but chaning at Gandhi square, there may be way to get there - isn't it? Thanks again for your help - all the best Karl
