Choosing an area to stay

by vpas Online Now Feb 15, 2013 at 7:25 PM

Been trying to locate a bed and breakfast/hotel. Have shortlisted a few... but which are the best areas to stay in? We are there for just a day and night to see the city and then moving on to Kruger National Park. We are looking for accommodation for a family of four(couple and teenaged boys) in the month of May

Johannesburg is really not easy without a car. There is only one public transport service from the airport (other than taxis) and that serves a narrow route. You do plan on hiring a car after the first day. I suggest you consider having a car for the first day as well, because that will give you lots more options. JHB is not a difficult city to drive in. We also drive on the left.

If you are arriving on the Mumbai flight, you get in quite early in the morning. Are you wanting to go to your reserved accom immediately to freshen up? (I will be using that flight in 2 weeks time)

You can mail me your shortlist to make suggestions on narrowing them down.

I am unable to send you a private message Gerald, some technical problem. In the meanwhile this is the list of places that I have shortlisted -- House on York (Kensington South) -- This is our 1st choice Hotel Mercure (Bedford view) 5th Avenue Gooseberry Guesthouse (Linden) Rabbit hole Guest house (Krugersdorp North) And yes, we are coming by the flight from Bombay. Do contact me in case you need any help down south in India. I live in a city called Hyderabad and would be glad to be of any help. Please mail me if you are able to. Many Thanks for all your help thus far, Seetha

    Got your message, thanks

Krugersdorp is much too far to the west. Linden is also a bit too far west. Give me a little time and I will check around now that I have a feeling of the class/budget. Please be a little patient because I have a couple of other things on my list.

Booking accom in JHB and CPT in May is not urgent now. Your priority is to find accom inside Kruger - if that is not possible, you will easily find something outside. Accom in Kruger is easier to get in the far northern parts of the park, but then travelling becomes a problem. (Kruger is bigger than Israel!)

Yes, since accommodation inside the park was not available when we checked, we are going through an agent called Siyabona Africa. They have managed to get us a self catering family room in Berg en dal inside Kruger. Trip advisor reviews are not great but these people assure me that it is clean and comfortable. I think I would go ahead with that in Kruger. We are there for 3 nights in Kruger. Wow I did not realise that Kruger is so large!!! Thank you,

House of York looks perfect....I would stay there myself. Convenient to the Airport, to the city tour, and to the road out to Kruger the next morning. 16km from airport, 7km from city center.

Nothing wrong with Berg en Dal. You could take a drive to the north inside the park, and then depending on the mood, either come back along the inside, or exit the park and do some higher speed touring outside. (Watch out for camera speed traps)

Just one last question regarding accommodation ... Can we book through Siyabona, are they safe? Coz if we book directly we are not getting the availability and also the cost is the same either ways.

I think Siyabona is safe, they have been around many years.

I don't like them because they block book Kruger camps for themselves, and then when they have to pay the deposit 1 month before, they give them back and Kruger suddenly has a surplus. They are not the only ones doing it though...it is a bunfight apparently. Which 3 nights do you plan to be in Kruger?
