    • Booking accommodation

      Iceland May 17, 2013 at 4:55 PM

I live in Australia and friend and I are travelling around Iceland from 23rd September 2013 for 3 weeks

After Reykjavik  we will be traveling around Iceland .  We need to book accommodation along our travels.  Most probably prior to setting off from Australia.   Our problem is that being photographers we are looking for the best light/ composition and  photographic opportunities. There might be times we wish to stay an extra day or two or feel for some reason, we need to move on. How do we book accommodation when we unsure which day we might be at a particular place.   It might not  happen all the time, but there will more than likely  be days  when we would need to change accommodation dates etc. Could you give us some advise how we book accommodation under the above conditions? Also we would like  some recommendations  for places to stay in the towns.   Farm stays/Guesthouses etc around Iceland.  We will be travelling  all around the country wanting to spend time in the most photographic areas.

Our thoughts are to  travel anti-clockwise from Rekyavik from there to  areas l are the Gullfoss waterfall, Vik, Yokalsarlon glacier (both on the south coast) and the other places recommended to me are: Hofi, Egilstarr, (east coast) Hasirik ayuregu on the north coast, Dettifoss waterfall which is the north and inland but can be reached by a normal car.  The rockstacks on the north coast towards the west.  The western fiords and the Snaefelles peninsula.

My friend insists that we can hire a car and not a 4wheel  is this ok?

Looking forward to hearing from you

      Sue

      Dyrholaey

      Iceland May 12, 2013 at 9:51 AM

      Hi all
I noticed in a one thread that some of you recommended stopping at Dyrholaey on the way to Vik to see Puffins. However, I'm aware that access may be restricted during nesting season around May/June. I'll be there on 24 May (two weeks time) any idea if it will be possible to go there & see puffins (we have binoculars so can stay at a distance).
      Thanks.

      Icelandic sheep wool socks

      Iceland May 13, 2013 at 5:42 AM

      Another day, another question ;-)
I read an article in a diving magazine where the author complety raved about the insulating quality of the socks he bought in Iceland. He explains that they are ideal to use in a dry suit because the special looseness of the wool provide such great insulation from the cold. At the same time he says that socks sold in shops may have compressed wool and so not the same quality (without explaining where in bought his 'uncompressed' socks, in a farm? speciality knitted for him???)
I'm in Iceland in a bit over a week, and will be in Reykjavik & the South West (up to Vik).
Any recommendation of big shops, small village shops etc where I coul dbuy those wonderful woollen socks?

      Thanks!

    • Road to Dettifoss open?

      Iceland May 17, 2013 at 2:40 AM

      Hello everyone,

We are heading to Iceland this coming Sunday and have rented a campervan.

Our plan is to try and circumnavigate the island in 6 days, sharing the driving and stopping of at some major attractions on route. We are a bunch of photographers to we'll be concentrating on sunrise / sunset.

Looking at the conditions it appears that the east road to Dettifoss is still closed? Does anyone know if this is accurate, I presumed it would be passable by now in our Camper if we took it nice and slow?

      Many thanks in advance,

      Mark

      Traveling in Iceland in May

      Iceland May 7, 2013 at 6:39 AM

My friends and I, 6 of us, are going to visit Iceland this week (9th - 14th) and rent a car.
We are thinking to go around the country as starting from Reykjavik for 5 days.
      However,
My another friend who has been studying abroad in Iceland told me not to do that because it is too dangerous.
I am wondering why it is too dangerous to do that. It is May and there should be almost no snow...

Could anyone, hopefully who live in Iceland, tell me something about it? Is it really too dangerous? Why?
      What should we be aware?

    • Renting a Car in Iceland

      Iceland May 6, 2013 at 1:21 AM

Hello! My husband and I are planning a trip to Iceland in July. We would like to rent a car (a VW Polo or Hyundai i10) to see this wonderful country. But we are confused about the rental car company that we should choose. After reading so many reviews on different sites, it is really difficult to make a choice. We were considering Budget Car Rental Company at first, but did not find a single positive review for it. Europcar does not insure the underbody... and we think that it is really important for the underbody to be insured given the road conditions in Iceland. How is Atak Car Rental? We got a couple of positive reviews for this one. Please help us by providing us with some information so that we can book early... before the prices shoot up!
