    • Train tickets Ulaanbaator to Beijing

      China May 17, 2013 at 4:19 AM

      Hi,
Sorry if this post isn't in the appropriate forum. I didn't know whether to post in China or Mongolia so settled on both.
I am looking to take this train route in June, preferably on or around the 27th June, when I believe there is a train. I want to book this in advance, as it's the busy season. Can anyone recommend any travel agencies for purchasing tickets, or advise me of the best way to buy?

Any help would be much appreciated!

    • Where is this "surprising" restroom in restaurant near the Forbidden City?

      Beijing May 6, 2013 at 6:26 AM

Do you know the name/location of this restroom, with these red lady-shaped sinks?
      flickr.com/photos/redhawk170...

The restaurant was located just outside the west side of the Forbidden City in Beijing (China).
The photographer "redhawk1700" took the photo some years ago and doesn't recall the name of the restaurant anymore.

      Thanks for your help!

Cheap tickets from Beijing to a nice beaches

      Beijing Apr 26, 2013 at 5:48 AM

I have found cheap tickets online to Beijing for Christmas and New Year 2013/2014. We would like to stay a couple of days in Beijing and then go somewhere nice for sun and beaches. We have been searching for cheap flight tickets from Beijing to Bali, elsewhere in Indonesia, Philippines, etc, but it is hard make a decent search when we are not sure about where we want to go. All we know is Beijing as the departure city and low cost flights to a beach.

Does anyone know a nice and sunny place where flight tickets are cheap from Beijing?

We have already been to Thailand and Malaysia so we would like to try a differt country. Another stop a couple of days in Seoul or Hong Kong might be possible as well so cheap flights from there to nice beaches would also be an option.

      Thank you from Lena

      Daytrip - Memorial and tombs

      Nanjing May 14, 2012 at 8:39 AM

We're planning on going to Nanjing for a day from Shanghai, not staying overnight. We're most interested in seeing the Massacre Memorial. Wondering if we also have time to see the Ming tombs at Purple Mountain. How to get between the two sites, etc? Is there anywhere we could have lunch around either of those places? Our hotel is arranging the train tickets for us and gave us a return time of 7pm. We would probably leave Shanghai at 8am taking the fast train.

      Suzhou Nov 8, 2011 at 6:26 PM

Hi, I would appreciate it if someone can help me in this. My family will be in Suzhou next week and we would like to take the Grand Canal Cruise. I have been reading postings from various sites and this makes me confused. Some recommended to take the cruise in front of Tiger Hill. Others said that cruise starts at Shuishang Lvyou Wharf. But I could not find the location of Shuishang Lvyou Wharf on the Suzhou map. Yet another site advises that "guests should purchase tickets at the port beside Renmin Bridge within the central urban space of Suzhou. the value is CNY35 per person, and therefore the cruise lasts for concerning eighty minutes". Any advise on exact location to take the cruise is most appreciated.

      Side (daily trips) from Shanghai

      Suzhou Sep 14, 2011 at 7:51 AM

Hi all, We are planning to visit Shanghai on March 2012 and stay for 9 days there. Our plans for side trips is to spend 2 days. We are interesting to visit "water towns", see picturesque canals, old houses and gardens, take a boat ride etc. A draft plan is one day to Hangzhou and the other one to Suzhou. What are your proposals? I read that Zhanghzou is a tourist trap. What other villages can be combined with Suzhou and how we can go fm Suzhou there? What is your opinion about Tongli, Nanxun? Also is it cheaper to buy silk fm these towns than in Shanghai?

    • restaurant where hot water is thrown across room into your cup of tea

      Nanjing Jan 9, 2011 at 1:32 PM

I was in Nanjing about 12 years ago. I was taken to a restaurant where the waiter "threw" the hot water into your tea from across the room. It was from a large pot of water that is strapped to the waiter's shoulder. The waiter throws a small amount of water (from anywhere in the room) and it lands in your cup and only a few drops may land on the table. I can't find any mention of this on the internet. In my opinion, this should be an olympic sport. It is amazing to see. Has anyone seen this?

    • Tongli instead of Souzhou

      Suzhou Sep 6, 2009 at 11:06 AM

Hi, in October I want to go by night train from Beijing to Souzhou and than take a morning bus to Tongli, where I want to stay 2 or max. 3 nights. I expect Tongli to be a little bit smaller than Souzhou, which I would prefer, because after Tongli I will continue to Shanghai. Is Souzhou a must? I have already seen gardens in Beijing and I'm not such a garden fan. I would prefer to see a typical water town with all the little bridges and waterways. If I stay for 3 nights I even could do a daytrip back to Souzhou but concerning my interests a daytrip to Xitang would be maybe better. Or does Souzhou offer better views of a typical water town (brideges, canals) than Tongli and Xitang?.

Travel from Giant Buddha to Taihu lake

      Wuxi Sep 6, 2009 at 1:26 AM

I was looking at taking a taxi from Wuxi railway station to the Giant Buddha. From the Giant Buddha to Tai hu Lake, would I get a taxi easily at the Giant buddha? Or is it better to rent the taxi for the full day? Then from Tai hu lake, will I get a taxi easily to the railway station?

      Suzhou Silk Festival

      Suzhou Jul 23, 2009 at 12:01 PM

I understand there is a silk festival in Suzhou each year in September. We will be there on September 13. Will there be any festivities? We will only be there for the day, but I'd like to purchase a length of silk fabric as a souvenir to make something back at home. Does this sound possible? Or is it very expensive for a bolt of cloth, maybe a few yards/feet/metres? Where is the best place to go to bargain for a good deal on a decent length of silk cloth? Thanks!

Hi, Anybody can tell me if in Suzhou there are shops similar to the shops at the 'silk market' in Beijing, selling good quality clothing but fake? Reg, Peter
