Am I crazy to go to Jerusalem while there is fighting in Lebanon (and Gaza)?

by tpbalazs Online Now Jul 22, 2006 at 3:39 PM

I have a flight booked to Tel Aviv, arriving Wednesday, July 26. I am scheduled to stay in Jerusalem for three weeks (I will be studying at Aish HaTorah in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City). I don't plan to do any traveling outside Jerusalem, other than to and from Tel Aviv for the flight. Friends and family have told me I am "fool hardy" and "mildly insane" for not rescheduling my trip, considering there is a shooting war in the north. My rabbi friends say not to worry, Jerusalem is safe. Any one in Jerusalem have any input on this one? Please don't make it a political (or religious) discussion. I just want some perspective both for myself and for those concerned about me (and for anyone else with a similar choice to make). Please advise! Thanks Tom

personal opinion,i dont think hezballah will target Jerusalem,as it has the Aqsa mosque which means a great deal to us muslims.

Jerusalem seems like it would be a safe zone as it is a holy city to Israel and Hezbollah. If the people living there say it is ok, then it probably is... i don't think you could say the same for any other part of Israel... Just be vigilant and be aware of your surroundings... You never know when it will be your time to go... you could be worrying about Israel and then get killed in a car accident on the way to the airport... it is normal for your family to be worried.... everyone told me I was crazy when I went to Syria, but it was actually safer than a lot of other places people visit...

Welcome, Tom, to Jerusalem !! No safer place on the globe than Jerusalem. Israelis come to Jerusalem for relaxing these days. You hear tourists speaking dozens of languages in the streets. Weather is fantastic, especially at nights. Hezbollah becomes more weaker day after day, fighting for survival, with no ability to threaten Jerusalem. I'll be glad to meet you. Avi

In Islam, Jerusalem is our 3rd holiest place on earth (Makkah and Madinah being the 1st and 2nd). Any Muslims using Jerusalem as their target (whether Sunni or Shia) would be very counter-productive. I hope others can tell you the savest route to and from the city. I, myself, wouldn't miss the opportunity to go.

That's odd, i was just watching a muslim family in Jerusalem (Israels largest muslim population I believe is in Jerusalem) standing over and discussing a shell site where two young boys were killed. I hardly think that is an indiction that no one will attack Jerusalem ....

Hey Kiwi, you make a valid point. However, no one was killed in Jerusalem. The two young boys were killed in Nazareth. Get your facts right before you post. I hope you put a little more thought into your other posts... news.yahoo.com/s/afp/2006071...

Actually looking at that photo in your url, it looks nothing like the location I was viewing on tv so I'm not sure I was wrong at all. But for your sake, I hope I was wrong, so I can be sure to put better thought into my future posts ;-)

I just check www.cnn.com and it says nothing about rockets landing in jerusalem... I also did a Yahoo search on "jerusalem rocket killed two boys" and nothing current came up... i didn't mean to sound so venemous in my post, but i hate when people get the facts wrong... ... i think muslims are misunderstood by the west and i thought you were kind of taking a jab at them...

Welcome back Tom. Let us know if you want to meet for a drink in Tel-Aviv... Until now the Hezballah hit only as south as Nazareth which is more than 100 km north of Jerusalem. Personally, I don't think they could care so much about religion. I'm sure if they could hit the prime minister office or one of the other government offices in Jerusalem they would have done it by now.

If I was wrong, I apologise Mike. I too hate wrong quotes. I guess i was being too casual, and should have checked my facts. I was just chatting away, while watching the news on tv. Its always hard to decide when to visit places with unrest and when not too. It's personal, it has to be a personal decision while access to such a place is still open. We can only wish everyone well.

The two kids were killed in Nazareth, which is the largest Arab city in Israel. Jerusalem is not considered an Arab city as the Arab are not a majority there. Also, although they are not Israel citizens, only residents. They have a special status, partly Israelis and partly Palestinians. While the Arab population of Nazareth are as Israelis as me and have nothing to do with the Palestinian authority.

I have family living in the largest Muslim populated country in the world, and it is far from the Middle East. I have no intention to have a go at them, believe me.

Marimar_72 is right. Unless their long-range rockets are extremely accurate (unlikely), they will not target Jerusalem. Saddam Hussein did not target Jerusalem during the first Gulf war for the same reason. As Bregman said, Hizbollah doesn't care that much about religion even though their name translates as "Party of God". An example was found in a border village taken over by Hizbollah, after it was taken by the Israel army. They used the local mosque as a weapons cache and ammunition dump. Even a rocket launcher was found on the premises.

They may not care too much about religion as they claim to but they will not try to hit Jerusalem cause if something will happen to on of the holly Muslim places they will get in trouble with the whole Arab world. As far as i see it Jerusalem is pretty safe and comfi this days. Sharon.

I want to emphasize Bregman and ramot418's claim based on facts: "As Bregman said, Hizbollah doesn't care that much about religion even though their name translates as "Party of God". An example was found in a border village taken over by Hizbollah, after it was taken by the Israel army. They used the local mosque as a weapons cache and ammunition dump. They don't have real god in their heart.

Shalom Tom adn welcome back to Israel: As others have stated there have been NO missiles or rockets on Jerusalem. It is first of all one of the most holy sites in Islam and even better it seems to be out of range of the Russian, Iranian and Syrian missiles that have been supplied to Hizbollah. Just this last weekend our adopted daughter, who lives in Jerusalem, was down and we spoke about the "feeling" in Jerusalem. She said that if you did not watch the news you would not be at all aware of what was happening up north, with the exception of more people being in Jerusalem (many people from the northern areas of Israel, which are under daily terrorist attacks, have taken leave of the north till the terrorist problem can be cleaned up), it is life as usual there she said, but with a very positive attitude. Well, in the end, I didn't go, not because I felt it was an unsafe trip but because I didn't want to make my family and friends crazy and no amount of rational argument seemed to reaasure them. I hope it won't be long before I can reschedule. Thanks everyone for your input.
