It has been a while since I have been there but as a genral rule, be careful where you go in town. If you stay on the "Hip Strip" as it is nicknamed i.e. the main seafront area, it is excellently policed by the JCF (police) but don't wander up the backstreets especially after dark, you are asking for trouble. I was working when I was there so didn't have much leisure time but fellow guests where I stayed suggested that a daytrip to Dunn's River Falls was well worth it. I am sure your resort can arrange that for you. Hope this assists, fergy.

Dunn's River Falls is a very popular daytrip, it's very crowded though and I didn't really care for the group aspect of the climb up the falls. I'd highly recommend hiring a guide on your own, I've used Barrett's before (although many years ago) and while it was slightly more expensive than the group tours, it's also more personal. Mayfield Falls and YS Falls, if you get there early you may be the only people there. We enjoyed seeing the Appleton Rum factory, we snorkeled with a manatee off the south coast and that was pretty cool. barrettadventures.com/tours/... You might also take a day and go to Negril, the beaches in Negril are much nicer than Mo Bay and you get to see another side of the island. Maybe the Riu has a sharing program with their resort on Bloody Bay in Negril.
