Hi, my mom and I are going to Milan for five days in the summer and would like to do a day trip to Lago Maggiore. I have never been to Italy before. A VTer told me that it is a good trip to go to Stresa by train and then to take a ferry to Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori. My guidebooks suggests this, too, and also says that it is feasible to take a funicular up to Monte Mottarone on the same day. Is it really possible to do this (the mountain and the three islands) within one day? Any help, suggestions and further links are welcome :-) As I said, I have never been to Italy and just started planning this trip. Thank you! Mirjam
I haven't done this trip and don't know if you've already got the relevant websites, but if you haven't (and for others): Milan Centrale>Stresa takes from 1h 13m, one-way fare 7.40euro. There are, roughly, trains every hour or so throughout the day. trenitalia.com/homepage_en.h... Ferry times and fare info in English for Lago Maggiore here: navigazionelaghi.it/eng/m_il... You will be able to see from the ferry timetables whether visiting the three islands is feasible for you. Timetable info for the Monte Mottarone funicular (for 2011, but is unlikely to change much): stresa-mottarone.it/summer_t...

if you wakeup early you can do a very good tour there... I did it myself and I reccomand it to you very much. have a look at this site lagomaggioreexpress.com/Ingl... a whole tour it costs 32 Eur. you could take a train from Milan to Domodossola and there take the centovalli train to Locarno. have a nice walk and a coffee there before taking the boat, if I remember well with the lagomaggioreexpress you can make two stops, I suggest the first one at Isola Bella and see how much time you'll spend there.. the tour could end at Stresa where you can take the train to go back to Milan. with sun it'll be a wonderful day, centovalli rail is really nice.

it's train plus boat, only one ticket no more lines to do.
