autostrade

by iwannatravelevrwhere Online Now Aug 14, 2011 at 3:27 AM

Hello, I am planning a road trip from Brindisi to Lake Como, but with lots of stops at Napoli, Roma, Firenze, Venezia, Milano and maybe somewhere else. Can you please tell me, what are the italian toll fees like? Which is the cheapest way to drive through all these cities? I've heard that the italian tolls are very expensive. Thank you so much :)

i think the autostrada attracts tolls near the cities and superstrada is free. Got know idea how to spell them but. For eg, driving into Milano using the tollway is expensive and fast.

Lawks, they certainly keep the info under wraps!! However, I have found the following, with a "plan your journey" link on the right. After several false starts, I realised I should be using the Italian place names!! Hence, a journey from Venezia to Firenze would cost €17.10. goitaly.about.com/gi/o.htm?z...

Dear Hawkhead, thank you very much. I checked this route planner and it is really helpful. I am under the impression that there are free motorways though, and that's something italians themselves would know better..

If you really plan to drive through these cities, which is not exactly a good idea, check out the keyword "zona traffico limitata" and check in advance which part of the cities belong to these zones of limited traffic that don't allow individual traffic to enter, otherwise you'll be facing not tolls but heavy heavy fines.

Agree, be careful of entering cities and even towns, where only authorized (registered) vehicles are allowed entry. This is not very clear to tourists and CCTV cameras record unauthorized vehicles followed by a fine in the mail! We rented a vehicle and were never told about these restrictions, but fortunately our hotel in Firenze notified the local police and obtained a dispensation for us.
