Naples to Bari

by gif Online Now Jul 10, 2004 at 10:19 AM

Hello, I'm planning a trip to Italy. I wanted to know how long would it take to get from Naples to Bari by bus? Is is possible to see something on the same day, before the departure, Paestum (I assume an hour away from Naples), Pompeii, or Herculaneum. I hope to get to Bari beween 8 and 9 o'clock at night. I'll appreciate your hints! Thanks! Ilya

First, get familiar with www.trenitalia.com, since most travel in Italy is by train, not bus. It looks like there is a train that leaves Naples about 2:30 in the afternoon, arriving in Bari (with a change at Caserta) about 6:17. The next train leaves Naples about 5:30 pm, and arrives in Bari (again, with a change in Caserta) about 9:17. However, trenitalia shows that on Wednesdays (in August, anyway, which I chose at random), there is a train that leaves Naples at 4:15 pm and arrives in Bari at 8:40, including the change in Caserta. It's unusual to have a train that runs only on Wednesdays, so I have to wonder what the story is here. In any case, even if you take the 2:30 train, you should have time to get up early and go see something (Pompei is like only 30 minutes away by train), and still make the 2:30 train... P.S. go look at www.pompeiisites.org, the official site for both Pompeii and Herculaneum. It has a lot of info, even with suggested tours, if you have a limited amount of time... Bill

I would see Naples before leaving (unless you are staying and seeing it prior to leaving). Naples is the most exciting and alive city in Italy! Of the other choices I would put them in the following order: 1. Ercolano 2. Pompei 3. Paestum The bus is not a practical option, it is when one is going to some out of the way village somewhere, but not for Bari.
