Not a journey I've done personally, but Ovindoli is a long way from Bari. Is there any chance of you changing your flight to one which lands in e.g. Rome ( with a much quicker train journey at 1h 45m)?

If not, then you have a longish (5+ hours) train journey from Bari Centrale railway station to the nearest railway station to Ovindoli: Celano-Ovinidoli. You'll find train times, details and fares in English on the official Italian railway website:

    trenitalia.com/homepage_en.h...

From Celano you will need bus or taxi up to Ovindoli. Distance is about 7 miles.

You might prefer to hire a car from Bari airport. www.viamichelin.com will give you route, route info and estimated driving time (around 4.5 hours).

when will you want to go there? ie from Rome/L'Aquila/Pescara you can get direct buses during the sky season

anyway by train from Bari you should go first to Pescara, then any train on line Rome /Pescara which stops at Avezzano station and from there Arpa bus to Ovindoli here the timetable (only Italian but easy) ro.autobus.it/ro/asp/Ricerca...

From Celano/Ovindoli you have very few buses (2) in a day, if you missed them you have to take a taxi or private transfer.

we might also stay for a day in Rome. Is it difficult to see the most important places in Rome; like the colosseum and fontana di trevi, in just one day? thanks

It is impossible to see 'the most important places' in Tome in one day: there are simply too many of them. And 'most important' anyway depends entirely on your own personal taste.

You can certainly see the Colosseum, Forum, Palatine, Trevi fountain, Spanish Steps and e.g. Piazza Navona in one day...and might even be able to fit in St Peter's Basilica as well.

But if you want to visit  the Colosseum/Forum/Palatine I suggest you buy your ticket in advance online so that you do not waste time in queues. Official site:

Central historical Rome is compact and very walkable indeed. It also has an excellent public transport system (Metro, bus and a few trams). You can buy a one-day BIG ticket for 6 euro which covers all of these modes of transport for 24 hours from date of first validation.
