The lake ferries are frequent on many routes and link up in much the same way as buses do (their primary function is to enable residents to work, access other settlements and so on). I think Como itself probably has the widest and easiest access. Information in English on the ferry site here:

There is also bus access around the lake:

Hi We stayed 5 nights in Milan early August 2012 and twice took the train to Lake Comom only 1 hour away.

The first day we walked to the ferry terminal and took the 10 hour ferry cruise (10am), but it leaves every hour. Large 3 deck ferry with cafe on top floor, nice areas outside to sit in sun, then move inside. The cruise went for approx 3 hours, stopping every 10 or 15 minutes at small villages with wonderful mansions lake side. Approx 1pm we stopped at Bellagio for 3 or 4 hours - a great stop fo lunch , shopping, star gazing etc etc Around 4 pm another ferry collectd us and continued on for 2 or 3 hours. Eventually we caught the train back to Milan , home by 9pm.

    Ferry fare approx 16 euros.

What I am saying is you do not have to stay in Como to enjoy it.

We returned 2 days later to sightsee the town and also go up the hill in the cable car.

I would stay in Como (http://www.prontohotel.com/ita/como/) or Bellagio (prontohotel.com/ita/bellagio.... Como is charming but a little bigger as far as the lake towns go. Bellagio is in the middle of the Y shape, so it's centrally located, plus it's well-connected by ferries. It's also closer to the gorgeous villas for which the lake is famous. Depends on what kind of feel you're looking for in your stay at Lake Como.

Depends what you want to see, but most stay middle lake, thats around Bellagio etc., but I have found it to be expensive, so suggest a stay further north in Gravedona and take the boat to visit Bellagio.

Go to Cernobbio and stay at the Hotel Miralago. The boat rental is 30 metres from your door and the ferry is 60 metres away. Also, the bonus is the hotel...excellent, clean, and right on the lake.

I would agrtee with this. The 'slow' boat along the lake is a fantastic mini cruise, visiting all the important towns and passing the village of George Clooney and also the one where Star Wars and James Bond was filmed. If you do the round trip, as suggested, is longer, but as stated, there is a bar and food available. Its also extremely reasonably priced.

    Why not in Tremezzo?

This lovely village is located in the middle (as name mean) of Lake of Como. You can easily reach using the ferry from Como or by car.
