Visa Requirements for Indian Passport holders with US Green Card (and expired US Visa!)

by jayzeemah Online Now May 9, 2012 at 2:12 PM

Hi all, this is my first time posting on any forum. I have been trolling quite a bit, but i haven't found the answer to this question. My husband and I wanted to visit turkey during the end of may and we wanted to know the visa requirements. We both have green cards and live in the us-i am aware that a green card has no bearing on what countries i can visit-however, the turkish embassy website says that indian passport holders with a valid US/UK/schengen VISA can get a 1 month visa on arrival in istanbul. Since we got our green cards, our visas are not valid (or necessary) anymore. I am extremely confused as to what this means-do I need to apply for a turkish visa in the states before i leave for my trip or will i be issued a visa on arrival. I would be really grateful if someone could help me out-this is very urgent because my husband and I need to book our tickets and apply for a visa if necessary-by tomorrow. I'm really loooking forward to getting some clarity on this and would really appreciate any help/responses...:) thanks

    Contact the nearest Turkish Embassy/Consulate.

Hi - we are always in the same situation. My husband is also a green card holder with an Indian passport. The rules are not very clear in specifying when "green card" replaces "valid U.S. visa". This is from the New York City Turkish Consulate's site (newyork.cg.mfa.gov.tr/Consul...: India: Diplomatic passport holders are exempt from visa for their travels up to 90 days. Ordinary, Special and Service passport holders are required to have visa to enter Turkey. Ordinary, Special and Service passport holders with a valid Schengen, UK or US visas may get their one month single entry visas at the Turkish border gates upon their arrival. According to this you won't need a visa and although it's usually difficult to get a response from the(any) consulate, I'd suggest trying to call or email for confirmation. Here is the link for the NYC contact information: newyork.cg.mfa.gov.tr/Contac.... If you happen to be in the area, you can stop in at the consulate office, it's directly across from the United Nations building. Have a wonderful time in Turkey! It's fantastic! P.S. We have happily found that your statement "i am aware that a green card has no bearing on what countries i can visit" is not always true. Many countries that an Indian passport holder would normally need a visa for is not the case if he/she is a green card holder.
