Belly Dance

by janetlee Online Now Mar 23, 2012 at 10:29 PM

We will go to Turkey next week and would like to watch the traditional Belly Dance. Can any VT member recommend any decent and traditional show in Istanbul or Goreme? Thanks.

the traditional Belly Dance is actually not traditional in our country. It s originally from Eigpt i believe. Galata Tower might be interesting. They have programme for tourists http://www.galatatower.net/program.htm

ROFL, the traditional Turkish dance is from the outskirts of Skopje called Shuto Orizari. It is traditional Romani (not Romanian!) dance, best done by older and khm.... not-really-skinny ladies. That's the place you want to visit for this kind of dance or music: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suto_O...

And now some music, that and related, no, it's not Turkish ;) Besides the word "Shutka" (Shuto Orizari) there are four letters more: G - U - CH - A ("CH" is one letter, no kiddin). youtube.com/watch?v=YbrmMWtK... youtube.com/watch?v=Qg44qKSb... youtube.com/watch?v=wt72qQ-4... youtube.com/watch?v=8tLv1HrD... youtube.com/watch?v=qAeJvUyK... youtube.com/watch?v=oEa-MjbU...

On our first visit to Istanbul, we signed up (on reflection, my only excuse is you live and learn) to an evening's entertainment that included belly dancing. I'm sure some people enjoyed the evening, and I'm sure the performers were happy to earn living from us, but never again! Not so much a rip off (it was all very professional) but just completly insincere and just put on as a business to take money from tourists. So try something out. You might get a decent evening, but I'd be careful what you pick.

Hi ;-) You will hurt turkish people if you think that belly dancing is some turkish tradition, as it is not at all. Max ;-)

Whilst in Goreme, why don't you go and watch the "Whirling Dervishes" This is Turkish without a doubt and worth seeing.

I understand now. We may consider watching "whirling dervishes" as it is traditional turkish dance/ceremony. Thanks a lot for your information.
