I'm kinda new to this site but will be visiting Istanbul next week. It's short notice and I'm wondering what are the must sees and the best social life to be had.
Hi. Check out this thread: http://www.virtualtourist.com/f/p/2b9b/ And, also check out the Istanbul page under destinations. Loads of great pages have been built on this fabulous city. Have a great time!! But beware... Istanbul might seduce you and you'll never want to leave.

I just visited there last September. There are enough must see sights in Istanbul for a month visit if you had the time. I would list my top places as : Aya Sophia, Blue Mosque, the covered bazaar, Topkapi Palace, Dolhamce Palace and the Sultanmet Mosque. It is also just a great place to roam the streets and soak in the culture. you can't walk hardly anywhere in the old city and not run into a Roman or Ottoman building or ruin of some kind. For social or nightlife the Sultanmet area has a lot of tourist orientated spots. For a more "Turkish" experience check out the Taksim square area.

I'm not quite sure about Sultanahmet's but for night life, instead of Sultanahmet, Taksim is the best area for any kind of entertaining programs.....But the thing is....you can't see the clubs and the bars on the main street...they are all located in the little streets around Istiklal Str. If you write me what you are interested with I can inform you about that kind of places..... Cheers, Aslihan

Aslihan, I'm coming from Georgia, with no guide books so any help in finding the decent places, however difficult, would be much appreciated. Cheers

A coffee would be a great idea for the Mon, as I've found out local knowledge is better than any guidebook. I'm relying on a couple of connections so the afternoon could be a no show; I would suggest early evening somewhere in the Sultanahmet. Pse advise?
