Also check out the instructions via tram here (depending traffic this may be a better option)

...and don't miss seeing the Mirimah Mosque nearby - there's a beautiful story behind it. Read about it at turkayfe.org/index.php/blogp...

Reaching Chora by tram may take less time, but considering the change of vehicles, etc I would go with the bus option.

The Hop-on Hop-off bus has a stop as near as it can manage and goes via Taksim. We used that.
The walk through the walls and down the road from the bus stop only takes 5 minutes at most.

Well, first of all you have to consider that nowadays a huuuuuuuuge construction going on at the Taksim Square area, most of the roads are blocked for vehicles and only pedestrians are allowed, and accordingly the bus stations are also moved. The public buses still depart from Taksim, but from some sideways and from other corners of the Taksim Square. So, just be aware for the updated situation of the area ... :)
Public bus NR. 87 (Taksim - Edirnekapı) will depart from Taksim and will also stop at the Kariye (Chora) Station sothat you can drop off the bus and reach your location. This route will be about 30 mins to 45 mins, depending on the time of the day and on the traffic ...
Enjoy our time in Istanbul ... :)

Bus is the best mode as mentioned above BUT if your'e hesitant with the bus, although this is more costly and require 3 transport change but it's not at all complicated. Here's how to do it from Sultanahmet or Kabatas station(end of the tram line). From Taksim of course you ahve to take the funicular train first to get to Kabatas station., then proceed reading how I did it here:

We won't be there until September - do you know if the Taksim constructions are likely to be finished by then?

Its assumed by the authorites that in July the construction will be over and as of August the Taksim Square will show us its "new fresh outlook" ... :)

I wonder what's the new fresh look might be @ TrendsetterME :), I was just there today and they kinda blocked lots of road for traffic, good for pedestrians though.
