I have never been there but wonder if you have thought of looking for an ex-pat site - either a French, English or Spanish language site wher you could"meet" others already living there? I have found ex-pat sites useful when planning trips so am sure you could find useful information from people actually living there They will know about passports, visas (maybe for animals as well!). I have found those I have been interested in via google. Good Luck!
