Hola amigos!! Sorry just practicing. I am new to VT and so far, I am very impressed. Some awesome info in this forum so thank you. Now, i haven't read much about the Grand, anyone been there? I read the beaches aren't so hot, but snorkeling should kick a**?? Is it better to rent a car vs a moped? Are there problems with 'sandfleas'? I sadly travelled during hurricane Ivan and had quite a dreadful experience so I am trying to make this the 'bestest' all inclusive yet. Any suggestions? I am brining my own snorkeling gear as that is my passion. Any words on the barracuda? In Kuauai, I actually swam against a bunch of them, tried to touch them, while wearing lots of jewelry, and mercifully didn't get hurt. I now know what they are-do they pose much of a threat there? Better to carry a knife? Or too shiny. are they attracted to underwater cameras? Sorry, so many questions but I am stoked out of this world. After all, it is Jacques Cousteau's favourite!! Happy Festivus/Holiday's everyone!!

I didin't have a problem with the barracuda, not when snorkelling or diving. I used my underwater camara and that didn't seem to attract them. I was actually swimming after them with my camera and remembered I had shiny metal grips holding my hair back so figured it would be a good idea to stop that ;-) The giant groupers were more curious than the barracudas were. I didn't have a problem with sand fleas but didn't stay at Grand Cozumel so can't say what they were like there. I rented a car on the island as it allowed me to transport my snorkelling gear to Chankanaab Park and also could lock my stuff up the trunk when exploring the ruins at San Gervasio. Have fun, I'm hoping to get back to Cozumel in the next few years.

Barracuda in that area of the Caribe don't present much danger. (In fact, people eat them, so who is more dangerous?) The jewelry thing is mostly dangerous in murky water...but why would you be wearing jewelry diving anyway...there a a lot of reasons not to and I can't think of a single reason to do so. A knife is not going to help you much if the barracuda decide to get revenge for all those barbecues. To a snorkler, a knife is absolutely necessary if you get down on the bottom and screw around with things. Getting hung up in invisible coils of fishline can kill you if you don't cut free quick. If you stick to surface you don't need one. I would worry less about the barracuda and concentrate on safe diving technique. As far as where to dive, you can't go too far wrong. It would be criminal not to take a camera. (If you are going to take serious photos of coral and fish and stuff, I would suggest a weight belt as an aid to getting down for shots.)

i was diving in cozulmel in july.. and the only time in my life that i have seen a baracuda was swimming off the shore in south beach miami. i dived the entire trip with a dive operator at my hotel.. (the guys at The Dive House at fiesta americana were soo awesome!) so i didn't get around.. but if i had the time, i think i would have liked to get around on a moped. i had no problem with sandfleas either.. and i am the itchiest little girl out there. have a great trip! i loved my time in cozumel!
