Bring the highest possible sunscreen or sunblock possible. We have used as high as 50 in the tropics and still gotten a good tan. Being closer to the equator the sun is very intense and if you plan to spend a lot fo time outside, you don't want to suffer a burn. Wear or buy a hat there too. Anything is possible as far a the weather goes in August - maybe there will be a hurricane. But, if no hurricane comes, it probably will rain. But, it won't rain all day - usually you get one heavy rain a day for an hour or two and then it clears off. I'm sure you will have a wonderful time.

Sunscreen shield level would depend nothing more than on you. Some tourists like to get really tanned so they use 0, some others always hide from the sun. So you should use whatever you feel comfortable with. Why don't you buy it there depending on how you see the place and weather? 8 hurricanes are scheduled to hit Mexico's coast during August and September. Their power is not known yet as it will depend on wind as time goes by. Enjoy!

I just returned from a long weekend diving in Cozumel. I am fair as fair can be and so I wore a 50 SPF.. I'd rather be pale than be miserably burnt. I didn't have to keep applying it and I was in and out of the water diving.. so I think that you should be fine with a 15 or so. Have a great time!

This is common-sense, but staying in the shade when the sun is at it's highest around midday will keep you from frying as well. The one day I got burnt was while sitting on the back of a boat returning from a snorkeling trip around 1 pm.
