    • DIY/Hardware store in Cheboksary

      Cheboksary May 17, 2015 at 2:59 AM

Hi All. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a reliable hardware/DIY supplier in Cheboksary? I will be working at an event there in June however the goods we are shipping over from the UK are being sent on a carnet document meaning that we can't send consumables with the main transport. We will need things like screws, nails, adhesive tapes etc.

      Many Thanks in advance!

      Saint Petersburg

Saint Petersburg May 5, 2015 at 6:54 AM

      Is this workable:

25 May Mon Day 03 : Moscow Vnukovo VKO - St. Petersburg Pulkovo LED (Taxi)–Aeroflot Rossiya SU6124 flight 09.30 – 11.00. St. Petersburg – Have driver & guide pick up directly from airport to Pushkin (1 Hr.) for Catherine Palace as per appointment time (closed on Tuesday & last Monday except for Summer, 670R, 30 min.). See the spacious airy ballroom, the “Grand Hall” or the “Hall of Lights”, with a spectacular painted ceiling, and comprises numerous distinctively decorated smaller rooms, including the reproduced Amber Room. Visiting the Imperial park, after the palace, and possibly the cute little town of Pushkin.

Drive along the ‘Great Perspective’ famous today as Nevsky Prospect, lined with marble palaces of Russian royalty and aristocracy. Visit St. Issac’s Cathedral - the main church of the Russian Empire. Later, visit to The Peter and Paul Fortress - the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and built to Domenico Trezzini’s designs from 1706-1740.

Evening at Leisure or view ‘opening of the bridges’ along Neva River cruise. OR C-189 Submarine Museum. Renaissance St. Petersburg Baltic Hotel. Pochtamtskaya Str 4 St. Petersburg - 190 000, RU. +78123804000

26 May Tue Day 04 : St. Petersburg – Visit the Hermitage Museum (closed on Monday, 600R o18), a museum of art and culture in St. Petersburg. It is the largest and oldest museums in the world with collections comprising of nearly three million items including the largest collection of paintings in the world.

Proceed to Peterhof (closed on Monday, 700R o18, 45 min). It is famous for its series of palaces and gardens known as the Peterhof Palace, laid out on the orders of the Russian Tsar, Peter the Great and sometimes called the ‘Russian Versailles’. Later, visit the Grand Palace entering by the ornate Ceremonial Staircase and see the Ballroom, Throne Room, the Western Chinese Study, the Drawing Room, the Imperial Suite, the Oak Study Room and the Crown Room. Visit Faberge museum.

From there, visit Church on Spilled Blood's interior, and maybe a canal cruise to see more of the city that is harder to see on foot. We could visit the Faberge Museum and palace, or visit Peter and Paul Fortress/Cathedral because they are open later.

Tonight, we discover traditional Russian dance and music during an elegant reception at the Russian Folklore show.

How do we fiat all this in??

We have to go to Pushkin directly from the airport, to be able to see. How long will that take? Can we aim for the 1 pm slot (Our flight reaches at 11 am)?

How and where do we hire minibus/van for 9 of us (including 1person 74 year old)?

We would need English speaking guide / Driver and van/bus on all days I think? How and where to book these at a decent rate?

      Thanks friends

      We are 9 of a family, including 1 Sr. Citizen 74 years, and 4 children (11, 12, 14, 18 year old).

We arrive at St Petersburg airport at about 11 am, from Moscow. Our hotel is Renaissance Baltic at Pochtamtskaya Str. 4. We leave for Helsinki by the 6.40 am Allegro Train on 27th May morning.

We would like to see the Pushkin -- Catherine's Palace (i think on 25th itself, as I believe it is closed on Tuesday the 26th). How do we go about this? Do we go directly from airport bu private van/minibus? How do we arrange van with English speaking driver or guide?

What else can we do on this day?

We would like to visit the Hermitage and Winter Palace, The riverfront and the opening of the bridges etc.?

How do we capture the essence in the short time that we have? What all can we do and see? Any activities??

How do we reach the train so early in the morning of 27th May, from hotel??

I know that these are a lot of questions, but please do help.

      Thanks in advance.

      Moscow Apr 26, 2015 at 5:23 AM

Hi...i want to know that given the current currency crisis in Russia, how has it effected the day to day prices in Moscow.

I am planning to travel with my wife and 12 year old son in June and would like to stay in a decent 3 star property and do the normal touristy things, have an un-rushed feel of the city, sit out cafe type lunch and some walk around sight seeing in the late afternoon / evening.

Then we plan to go to St. Petersburg by high speed train

How much should be budget per day in dollars per head? We so not plan to eat at fancy places or stay at fancy places but would like to visit the touristy cathedrals/spots, etc. So not a budget travel but not too expensive too

What kind of costs for such a normal holiday? Any insights will be appreciated.

I will be there for only 3 nights and that is why I could really use some tips. Please do not give me tips like hire a professional photographer or some other tips that I could come up myself (sorry if I am being straightforward but I am really discouraging tips that will turn me off because I seldom ask for tips. thank you).

      Birthday in Irkutsk

by willsk22 Online Now Jul 16, 2013 at 7:50 AM

I am travelling from Beijing to Moscow via UlaanBaatar to see family in Moscow for New Years.

However it is my Birthday around the time I will be in Irkutsk, my question is- whilst it's not a milestone birthday and I will be on my own, is there a decent bar scene, so I can live a few glasses to myself! Not really that bothered about birthdays, but as I'm travelling I thought doing something in Baikal in the day and staying somewhere nice on the evening would be as good as spending it slugging another night out on the train...

Any ideas or suggestions most welcome.. Oh I am a 36 yr old British male btw.

      Regards,

      Will

      Hello.

I'm getting the train across to Ulan Bator, and get into Urkutsk at 2.32am. I only have that day and the next day there, before getting the train on. (Don't ask... visa mess up).

Can anyone give me advice on what to do - is there somewhere I should stay in Irkutsk at that time cheaply for a few hours? Or is there a way to make my way directly to Listvyanka... and any recommendations on where to stay?

Thank you so much. It probably looks like I'm being lazy. But I've done lots of looking into this and figure I can work something out. But given my limited time, it seemed wisest to ask the experts for a recommendation!

      Thanks again,

He is travelling from Shanghai to Beijing, then by train, arriving in Irkutsk September 6th. He has tickets booked as far as Irkutsk.
He has been trying to secure a ticket from Irkutsk to Moscow and onwards to Riga.

It would be great to hear from anyone who has done this trip or something similar so that I can pass on any advice.

I have noticed, mainly in the country, that the window frames are painted blue! why blue? was it fashion 100 years ago when it was painted last time or does it have something to do with nationalism? Or is it me who is just going crazy? Well the last explanation can not be rulled out! :op I appologize that i have no photo of it on the computer, but if anyone knows what i am talking about and have an idea... well feel free to answer.

Hi all - any suggestions for a reasonable clean hotel in Irkutsk where I can stay first night after arrival on train? I believe I will need a hotel that will take care of registering my visa and allow me to be on my way to Olkhon Island the next day. Thanks!
