We are a family of 4 - 2 parents, 17, and 15 year olds - and we are thinking of a last minute summer trip to Ireland (maybe 8 days in all). A package one, Dublin and a few days of driving: 1. 3 or 4 days in Dublin? 2. With the other 4 or 5 days, how many country places should we see without going nuts? 3. What would a central location be from which we could day trips of up to 100 miles or so? Wife likes shopping and castles, books and poetry readings, kids and me mucking about, maybe an afternoon riding. The sea. Thank you in advance.
Fly drive packages are great but stay well clear of the accommodation voucher sc*m. Ennis is a great base for County Clare (east as well as west) and the whole Shannon Region. http://www.shannonregiontourism.ie/ Killarney would be a good base for the South West corner of Kerry and West Cork.

My advice is to spend five days in Dublin, then go to Galway for a couple of days, then back to Dublin for your last night. There are plenty of activities (and shopping!) for all the family in Dublin. The city is ideally situated close to the sea and the mountains so you can enjoy the urban and the rural in close proximity. By basing yourself in the city you will be able to see the sights in the city and travel around the area without the hassle of moving to new locations everyday. A good way to get to know the city is to join an organised tour and there are a great variety to choose from apart from the more obvious hop-on hop-off bus tours. Good tours in Dublin city include: http://www.vikingsplash.com/, http://www.dublinpubcrawl.com/ http://www.glidetours.ie/, http://www.newdublintours.com/, http://www.dublinsightseeing.ie/ You can also spend some time visiting the pretty coastal villages around Dublin Bay such as: 1) Dalkey village, about ten miles south of Dublin city, easily accessible by public transport, it has a castle, an island(boat trips available), two harbours, great pubs and cafés. http://www.dalkeyvillage.com/ http://www.dalkeycastle.com/ 2) Howth village, about ten miles north of Dublin city, easily accessible by public transport, it has a castle, an island(boat trips available), a harbour with trawlers and fishermen, lots of seafood restaurants, cliff walks(maps from tourist office on pier). dublintourist.com/towns/howt... A little further afield you could travel to several other interesting, historic locations either on public transport or on an organised tour: Bru na Boinne Neolithic site and visitor centre at Newgrange: heritageireland.ie/en/midlan... Kilkenny City and castle: http://www.kilkennycastle.ie/en/ Trim Castle and a walk along the river Boyne: heritageireland.ie/en/midlan... Glendalough, monastic site and national park: http://www.glendalough.ie/ For the second part of your holiday you could base yourselves in Galway city for a visit to the west, taking organised tours to see the most in the shortest time – one day a trip to Connemara and the other a trip south to Co. Clare visiting the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher. Evenings could be spent in the city visiting various restaurants and pubs, enjoying the music and people-watching!
