I am coming to Ioannina at the end of January and I intend to travel to visit the Meteore. I heard that the tunnel under Katara is not open yet... does it mean that I have to go over Katara pass to reach Kalamaka? If so, is it likely to find snow on the road in this period? Would anybody suggest an alternative itinerary to reach the Meteore? Also I am looking for a good but cheap hotel in Ioannina for one night. I would like some suggestions. Thank you all. Massimo
Yes. You have to drive over Katara pass, this is the only way to Kalambaka. The tunnel will be used by the new Egnatia highway, that is under construction. Katara pass closes for a few times during the year, especially when there is a sudden snow and the snow-ploughs do not have the time to clear it. Another cause may be that some heavy truck has glided on the slippery icy road and closed it. In any case, intervention is quick in order to reopen the road. You must have wheel-chains with you to be assured just in case. In difficult situations, Traffic Police allows only the cars with wheel-chains to pass. Thank you Syefanos for your help... this time I will avoid that road and reach athens via Patras... In spring hope the road will be more safe.... Ciao
