Interlaken to cinque terre

by shiredawn Online Now Jan 25, 2011 at 6:58 PM

I am in the middle of planning a trip for 4 adults and am getting crazy trying to figure out itineraries and trains. My (very flexible) plan is to fly into Zurich, then make our way to Grindelwald and spend 5 nights there. From there, we want to visit Cinque Terre and Venice. Does anyone have any suggestions on which to see first, then second, or does it matter transportation-wise? Also, should be buy the Swiss Pass, the 1/2 pass, or just purchase train tickets point-by-point? Thank you so much for any tips or information you might offer. Happy traveling!

Good you mention it is july, because that possibly explains part of your problem. If you try to look up train transportation from Grindelwald to Cinque Terre for July right now you'll find out that the Italian Railways don't publish their schedule that far in advance. I you want to know how to get from A to B by train just look up times for a similar weekday to your intended travel day, but in next week. Schedules are fairly constant. If you're going to spend five days in Grindelwald I wouldn't get a Swiss Pass. Use www.sbb.ch to get an estimate of prices for the trips you want to do, to figure out if a 1/2 fare Card is a good idea. Otherwhise you could also get a "Berner Oberland Pass", which is probably a better deal for you. For the trip from Grindelwald to Cinque Terre buy your ticket in advance though, somewhere in may, to get a good price. You can buy this from www.sbb.ch.

A lot depends on how you plan to spend your time when you are at Grindelwald and if you will also be flying OUT of Zurich. One thing that you might consider is a flexi/saver Swiss pass. You pick the number of days that you think you would use and with flexi you they don't have to be in a row. If you will train to Grindelwald and then maybe use it a day or two to get around the area then a day for the Swiss part of the trip to Italy and then again for the Swiss part of the trip back to Zurich it should be pretty easy to see if it's a good deal or not. Rick Steves has a little map on his site that gives you an idea of the prices for train tickets to and from lots of places. If you buy savers you will need to travel together, at least two and two. You might also look at two country (CH - Italy) pass and see if that would work for you. Easy to get around Cinque Terre on the train... You also have the advantage of never having to take time to buy a ticket! I could go on endlessly about the Interlaken area but I won't right now but we spend about a week a year there, ride trains almost every day and love it!
