Rajastan region

by Ramonq Online Now Jun 14, 2012 at 6:54 AM

Where is the best area, in terms of convenience, tourist facilities and transportation, to base yourself between Mumbai and New Delhi for exploration of the Rajastan region? Jodhpur, Udaipur or Jaipur? or some other town? I shall be flying from Mumbai.

Jaipur would be closer to Delhi, while Udaipur is closer to Ahmedabad. Jodhpur and udaipur are very beautiful. I personally like Jaipur too, though it is crowded. Lots to see in Rajasthan.

Why choose one? I'd spend at least a couple of nights in each - they're all fascinating, and beautiful, and there's little to choose between them in terms of facilities.

Jaipur is the Capital of Rajasthan & centrally located and having many things to see. It is close to Delhi (4-5 hours by road). Rajashtan Govt. is having very good Airconditioned Volvo bus services to & from Delhi. To see the Royalty of Rajasthan, you can visit Jaipur city Place, Amer fort, Jaigarh fort, Hawa mahal etc. Udaipur is also beautiful famous for lakes. So, you can choose as per your liking.

My suggestion : Getting from Delhi to Jaipur is easy.......plenty of options (train, bus) A day or two in Jaipur (not my favourite city however) Then a train from Jaipur to Udaipur. Train # 19665 leaves Jaipur at 22.30pm and arrives in Udaipur at 6.10am Or Ananya Express # 12315 leaves Jaipur at 17.20 arrives Udaipur 3am (too early!) Here is booking site: indiarailinfo.com/search/272... Base yourself in Udaipur, which has many interesting towns and villages nearby to visit. I can recommend Jaiwana Haveli as accommodation, where the helpful owner Yash can organize a car & driver for you for a very decent rate. He has been doing this for many VT members at my recommendation, and the hotel is lovely, overlooking the lake & mountains. Go to Chittorgarh Fort as a day trip- fascinating. Bundi is also beautiful, and just a few hours away. Udaipur has an airport (so you could fly direct to Mumbai if needed) and a train station, so a good idea is to catch a train to Mumbai- it stops off at Ahmadabad. You could break your journey there for a day or two- visit Gandhi Ashram and markets where there are the very special crafts (mirrorwork clothing is one of them). Then onwards again by train to Mumbai. I have info on all these towns and cities in my VT pages- there are links on my homepage. Its also possible to go to Jodhpur from Udaipur, easily by car.(no trains between these cities) However, once you get to Udaipur, you will understand why I love it .....I was there for my 6th visit in February. Its THE most beautiful city in India.

I can certainly recommend Udaipur , but as previously suggested why not a couple of days in each place as they all have something to offer.

When we were travelling through India over Christmas 2010 and New Year 2011, We had two nights in Jaipur, three nights in Jodhpur and four nights in Udaipur - seemed perfect too me. We missed out Jaisalmer but would hav eliked to have gone there too - not least for a ride through the desert. Pushkar might be worthwhile too. There are trains between most of these and buses too.

Yes if the time permits Pushkar and Jaiselmir are certainly worth a visit, perhaps only visit one of the previous 3 suggested and allow time for Jaiselmir and Pushkar. I wouldn't say that Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaipur are all the same but Jaiselmir with the fortress and Pushkar on the lake are almost unique.

Many thanks for your inputs. I have decided to stay in Udaipur and then to Jaipur. I have only 9 days in Rajasthan, and do not like to run all over the place under the intense heat, so unfortunately I have decided to skip Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. I'd like to take things slower and stay longer in a place for better appreciation.

Ramon I think thats a very good idea........ its just too exhausting to rush around. There is plenty to see and do in Udaipur and Jaipur. Please feel free to email me if you want any info re accommodation. Jaiwana Haveli is where I always stay, and many VT members have stayed there at my recommendation. Fantastic value, best views, food and the best service in India. Overlooks the Lake Pichola. Review on my Udaipur page for Jaiwana.

The best place to base yourself is Jaipur but then it may not work to your advantage if you are going northwards from Mumbai. Mount Abu would be first on the way followed by Udaipur and then most of the places are all along a line from Jaisalmer in the West to Ranthambore in the East. Do visit the main cities of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur and Pushkar besides going off the beaten track to places like the Shekhawati region to see the unique painted havelis of Nawalgarh, Mandawa, Ramgarh, etc. Also spend some time in Osian, Ranakpur and Mount Abu if you are interested in temple architecture. Don't miss the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary and the Ranthambore National Park if you are interested in birding and wildlife. All this is definitely not possible in a few days and you will definitely have to decide which places to see and which to leave out for another visit!!! Hope this helps. Cheers, Aadil.
