Hi. My boyfriend and I are going to India for the first time in June (he's been before but yrs ago with the army, in Jammu and Kashmir). We have a few questions, and would really appreciate it if you guys could help us out! We start in Mumbai, then are going to Aurangabad,Nagpur,Gwalior,Lucknow,Veransi,Delhi, shimla, and a few more in Rajastahn and Gujarat. Ok, here goes...! 1. How much is the entry to the Taj Mahal? 2. Do they sell Tampax in India, if not, what are the tampons like? 3. We think we will have about £100 pounds each a week all inclusive. Do you think this will be sufficient?? We are ready for budget acommodation! 4. What is the weather like in the Thar Desert between June and Sept? 5. I understand that as a woman I need to be sensitive about my clothing. Do i have to cover right down to my ankles and wrists? 6. What is the best way to secure our rucksacks in our rooms? we've seen pac-safes in Millets, but they're £45... a bit too expensive for us... 7. Is it possible for us to have an elephant ride in the places we are going? 8. We are confused about the do's and don't's for women in Amritstar....any details really appreciated! Thankyou so so much, we would be so grateful for any tips!! Jane and Adam
I have a *** memory sorry but I remember entry to Taj Mahal being 30 USD. Maximum 20 quid anyhow but theres also Red Fort. Both are must sees despite the price. Just dont spend too long in Agra cos the place is one massive tourist trap!! Not Tampax but OBs. Although not easiest to find. OBs dont have applicators (but as a bloke I dont see what that means. Thats what the girlfriend says). We spent 1500 quid between 2 in 3 months in India and while backpackers dont go the cheapest option. Dont worry about real budget accomodation. Except one place, everywhere we stayed was fine. You can see where we went either on travel pages here or in pics on www.offexploring.com/largerama. So on that basis, your figures are more than enough. Clothing sensitivity is your call. I have seen 18 year old Swedish girls in the same clothes they wear on Aussie beaches but they get the most stares and leers. My girlfriend wore 3/4 length trousers and t shirts that covered her shoulders. That was fine but if you have breasts and/or blonde hair, you will get stared at. You get used to it. Dont worry about security that much. Just put a padlock on your rucksack that has any valuables in (usually front pack). I would do that rather than leave valuables at desk. Alternative is carry valuables with you. Dont bother with pacsafes. Not necessary in my opinion. In Amritsar, assuming you mean at the Golden temple, there are separate women only bathing places if you wish to get in the water. Other than that I cant remember anything special. But it will be clear to you just by watching the masses of Indians and what they are doing. Great place to go though and Temple guards are helpful. That should be enough for you to chew on. You can email me on nick@on-the-road.co.uk for further help. We were there from Sept 05 to Dec 05. Had a ball despite initial worries. You will enjoy it. Nick x
