I assume you are referring to the motorised rickshaw (called autorickshaws nowadays).......

I had a big adventure in one of these contraptions some years ago in Delhi, which nearly resulted in my premature death, when the rickshaw I was travelling on collided with another and overturned on its side, spilling all the occupants on to the busy road, one Indian man was badly gashed along his arm and had to be taken to hospital. These Lambretta-based scooters are top heavy and unstable, the Harley Davidson ones were heavier, more geometrically balanced and safer.

My advice.......seek out and buy an old Ambassador car instead, they were clones of the British Morris Oxford, reliable, safe and would go on forever, alternatively, make sure your life insurance policy is up to date!!........

     Benny.

Why don't you join up with the 'Rickshaw Run'? We had one in 2009, which started from Pondicherry and finished in Shillong. The next year they started from Shillong and ended up in Goa. Here's their link:

Our fearless leader VT G.M. participated in one such race. Story on his personal pages.........d:o)

I did this as well, but not in a race per se. I was a guest of the General Manager of the Lake Palace Hotel in Udaipur. He also owned the transport company responsible for the tuk-tuk race in the Bond film "Octopussy". After a couple of bottles of very bad rum, we eh, - recreated the movie race...........well it was not filmable, but it was crazy fun...........wait! Does drink/drive rules cover tuk-tuks............d:o)

These Autorickshaws are basically two-wheeler Lambretta or Vespa scooters, converted into tricycles, they are unstable, mainly because of the steering, there is no steering wheel just handle bars, the left twistgrip will be the clutch and gearchange, the right one will be the accelerator, and front wheel brake, rear wheels the footbrake on the floor, so if you are only accustomed to driving a car or a motorcycle, I would recommend getting plenty of driving practice, before embarking on your "epic journey" to gain confidence in handling the vehicle, because it will handle entirely different from either car or motorbike. Also check if the engine is two stroke or four stroke, two stroke engines rely on oil being mixed with the petrol for lubrication, four strokes have a seperate oil tank, but I expect any garage where you refuel will know the correct fuel to use. So, rather you than me, but good luck, and watch out for the roam-everywhere sacred cows with sharp horns, everybody has to give way to them!........Benny.
