Hi everyone! I'm planning a trip to Iceland in late June (itinerary is below). I have two questions: (1) Would it be better to devote 2 days to exploring Lake Myvatn properly, and then a third day to getting to Husavik, seeing the Whale Museum, and going whale watching? (2) Will 3 days in Stykissholmur be enough to: drive around the Snaefellsnes National Park (1 day), take an overnight trip to Flatey Island (1 day), then climb Helgafell, see the lighthouse and Library of Water in Stykissholmur, and snowmobile to the top of Snaefellsjokull (1 day)? I'd really appreciate any thoughts you have. Thanks very much! Sincerely, Dan222 Days 1-2: Reykjavik Days 3-4: weekend hike on Thorsmork trail (sponsored) Day 5: Reykjavik, fly to Isafjorthur in the evening Day 6: one-day trek in Hornstrandir (sponsored), stay in Isafjorthur Day 7: fly to Reykjavik in morning, rent car, drive to Snaefellsnes Peninsula Days 8-9: continue exploring Snaefellsnes Peninsula (stay in Stykkissholmur), drive back to Reykjavik night of Day 9 to return car Day 10: Fly to Akureyri in morning, rent car, drive around Lake Myvatn (stay in Akureyri) Day 11: continue seeing Lake Myvatn and environs, drive to Husavik for whale watching (stay in Akureyri) Day 12-13: hike from Dettifoss to Asbyrgi (with overnight stay in Vesturdalur campsite) Day 14: fly back to Reykjavik, fly home
My only comment is you are going to miss some stunning scenery with all the flying you are going to be doing. Try the geothermal baths in Myvatn; similar to the Blue Lagoon, but not as commercialized. Two days in the area will be plenty of time.

Two days in Myvatn is good, there is a lot to explore then, one day in Húsavík including the whale watching is enough. 3 days with Stykkishólmur as a base is good. Have a look at my pages on Iceland and the Snaefellsnes peninsula where I have added a lot of tips and photos on my country.

I'm in Iceland right now and we did 1 full on day in Myvatn and I would very much advise that you need 2 days. Def devote time to see Godafoss (right off the ring road) which I found to be a very graceful and beautiful waterfall (not high nor big but beautiful).

Be sure to visit and revisit Regina's pages -- they are awesome and I used them greatly in planning the Iceland trip.

Thanks, Ana, yes, definitely 2 days are needed in Myvatn, there is just too much to explore there, when we go there we camp for one night. Have a lovely rest of your stay here and it was very nice meeting you while you were in Reykjavík :)
