Hi all ! Looks like most of us have questions about the car rentals ... We are going to Iceland from april 3rd to april 17th. Is it best to book a car in advance or can we wait until we're there? We're thinking about not renting one for tha first and last couple of days, since we want to explore Reykjavik and do some organized tours (with pick-up/drop-off at the hotel). The hotel offered to help us book a car on arrival, but I don't know if it's a good idea to wait instead of booking now. What's your thought/experience on that ? Thanks in advance ! Jessika
Good idea not to rent a car while in Reykjavik. The city is not bug and if you like to walk you can easily explore it. Anyway, the public transportation system is very efficient. Organized tours are good, they take you to the most known places and allow you time for the visit. There is also a guide who usually speak English. If you want to rent a car, just do it once on the spot, as we did. Driving in iceland along the ring road is easy: no much traffic, paved road, great landscapes. Fuel stations at all the town along the road. If you want to leave the main road and visit inland, then you probably neeed a 4WD, a good map and be careful about the fuel level! Cheers gmg

I tend to book in advance, because that is the way I tend to do things, but you will be there in low season, so availability will not be a problem. Reykjavik is pretty walkable and you can certainly do the main highlights without a car. I wouldn't spend more than a day or two there. It's not that big or that interesting (in fact on our second visit, we only spent one night there and we arrived at close to midnight, got some sleep and then hit the road). Not to sure on the road conditions at that time of year though.

I would recommend booking in advance, even hough it is off-season. I would also recommend a 4WD. You will not be permitted to go onto F-roads at this time of year and the main ring road is well maintained from snow etc... most of the time BUT conditions can be very dramatically changable in April - clear skies one moment and fierce, white-out blizzards the next. I would also recommend that you have sleeping bags in the car and adequate amounts of food and drink. Please do not under estimate the force of anture in Iceland in April :-) it is a beautiful, beautiful time o the year, btw. You will have an amazing time.

oh but thus much said - if you are only literally doing day trips from Reykjavik, it is a little milder around there - a 2WD will probably suffice :D
