Dear friends, Our itinerary includes 13 days around Iceland by a 4x4 car. Pls. see a link here: http://goo.gl/maps/L1ERs One of the attractions we are planning to see is Askja but it will consume almost a full day. Should we stay in Mývatn additional day and one day less on the north/north-west side (maybe skip Sauðárkrókur )? What are the road conditions from rout 1 to Askja in July? What is the walking distance from the nearest road? Thank you in advance, Meir
We loved the Askja / Viti area, and yes, it will take you most of the day on some very challanging roads (much of the trip feels like offroading, even though you are still on a "road"). It's about a 45 minute walk each way from the nearest parking lot to get to Lake Öskjuvatn and the Viti crater, part of it through snow (we were there in July; 12 day trip in total). We did not visit the West Fjord area at all this trip. We spent one night in the Myvatn area,
