Hello all, My work approached me about traveling to Hyderabad for work. I've never been to India before and I am in general a little anxious about leaving the United States. I was curious how Americans are perceived there. I remember seeing some radicals on the news in past years, is this still a reality or are there other security concerns? I guess what I am looking to know, is that should I feel alarmed at all about exploring the city after work? Thanks, CH
You should not feel alarmed in the least. I have been traveling to India for more than a dozen years (including multiple trips to HYD, the last being two months ago). I have never felt anything negative at all as far as being American, either traveling for work or for pleasure. India takes some getting used to, so if you have never been there before, it will be a good idea to keep an open mind. My one huge piece of advice is to fly in and out of Hyderabad's excellent new airport rather than connecting through Mumbai or Delhi. Mumbai's airport in particular is a nightmare; Delhi has improved, but it's still not as good as Hyderabad, and transferring international to domestic is not fun.

Hi - Hyderabad is a great city! There's a huge IT community - many of whom are Americans and you shouldn't have any problems. There are places you/everyone will encounter extra security checks (hotels, malls, etc.) but nothing out of the norm. There is quite a lot to see and explore during your "off" hours. If you'd like, take a look at my Hyderabad pages about places to explore, eat, etc. - "Hyderabad: Of Pearls & Biryani" - Hyderabad by Donna_in_India. Don't forget to have some biryani! Have a great time. (Agree with Julie about flying into Hyderabad if possible - one of the best Indian airports, IMO.)

Hyderabad is safer than New York. It is a mixture of high tech city and traditional indian town. Hubby goes there quite a lot. He says that you only get bothered by people selling you things, but you are highly unlikely to get shot. It's very hot there too, 40oC on occasion.
