Hi, I am thinking of booking a holiday from UK to Hurghada direct over new year 2011 - but want to know if it is safe considering the political unrest in the larger cities. Has there been ANY unrest or danger in this area in the last 3-6 months? Thanks.
I was in Luxor last week (no problems) and met a lot of people who had just been in Hurghada the previous week and loved it, absolutely no problem. However, things can change quickly...

You should be safe in the tourist regions of Egypt..and the ordinary people there still need your tourist money..I have been to Hurghada in the past and found it a wonderfull place...we have just come back from El Quesir and we experienced no problems at all...I would go back in a heartbeat!

Hurghada will be perfectly safe!!! Unrest is in Tahrir Square, Cairo. Cairo is a 20 million inhabitants Metropole: 99% of Cairo is safe to go! There is unrest in Alexandria and Ismaelia. All cities in the North of Egypt, far away from Hurghada. Hurghada is tourism area, that will be protected! Egypt is depending for 45% of its national income on tourism. Why kill the duck with the golden eggs??? The protestors are well aware of that!!! Riots will stay far away from places as Hurghada or Sharm el Sheikh.

Hurghada is not really Egypt, it's a completely artificial resort secluded from the rest of the countrt and pretty boring, so yes you'll be 100% safe. However I'd advise you to go to Sinai's Dahab instead, much more interesting.

I am living at my flat in hurghada at the moment and there are no problems. I was at the Aladin hotel in January/ Feb this year when revolution was on and it was quiet here then too. I am sure you will have a lovely holiday over the new year. Please do do let the unrest put you off the people need you here on holiday and I am sure they will make sure you have a great time.
