Hi there, we (2xadults / 3x18 year olds) are visiting Egypt for the first time and staying in Sahl Haseesh for 2 weeks in July and wondered what is the best thing to do about currency? I have read loads of forums and everyone advises different things. So, can you please let me know if it is best to take LE, or best to take GBP and exchange them over in Egypt? Rate here is approx LE8 for each £1. Any idea of rates in Egypt, particularly in hotels?? Also, is it best to book trips before travel, or pay in LE when there? Any advice much appreciated. Many thanks
hi there , here more than 8 L.E because that if you can bring with you Egyptian pounds will be better for you , here about 8.65

The rate in Luxor is about 9.6EGP to the pound, today. It's always about 10% better in Egypt, so bring your Sterling cash. No coins or Scotch notes though. Ask for a selection of notes as you change, small notes are good for tipping or giving as baksheesh.

Sorry, I overlooked one point. The exchange rates here only vary very slightly from bank to bank, so in one hotel based bank, you might get 9.58EGP while in another it may be as much as 9.61EGP. Unless you're changing a load of money in one go, it doesn't really make much difference. Have fun!

Just to add bec. I just finished my Egypt trip...it was also my big concern before flying to there if I need to book tours or trips before arriving. I'm glad I did not, because most tours (maybe all) are a lot cheaper locally in Egypt -- either from travel agents/operators or the hotel (esp. the budget hotels). Most hotels - if not all of them - can arrange all the tours, even train tickets, even private car/driver is a lot cheaper when book upfront, just don't forget to haggle -- to almost everything! Enjoy Egypt!

I did not go to Hurghada or the erd sea area (the exact forum loc. where you posted this), I started in Aswan, Luxor, then Cairo cuz I only have about 2 weeks and not up for a swim or the beach. But, if you're heading in those directions I've mentioned, I'm starting to build my trip pages here in VT, done with Aswan, working on Luxor, Cairo's next. So you can always ask, if you'll be going in those places, or any other general Egypt concerns. But for any tours around Egypt -- it's cheaper there on site, I've discovered that anywhere in Egypt. And, I repeat -- don't forget to bargain on almost any stuff or service, it's totally expected. Wish you happy trip!

Hi Shazzi Welcome to Egyptian Forum question) I mostly answer question on Dubai and UAE and Bahrain but I will happy to answer your question. Best currency to bring to Egypt it’s your own currency and my advise is do not buy Egyptian pounds from post office or Exchange place – you will get a better rate in Egypt – I am aware that £1 = 9.6 EGP: You also can exchange your money at banks or exchange place. I am due to visit Cairo within next few months I will use GBP: I wish you have a wonderful holiday Dan
