North Coast Redwoods

by cylander Online Now Mar 22, 2007 at 7:57 PM

My husband and I only have a couple of days to explore the redwoods on our way up towards the Oregon Coast. Which Park is the most awesome?

Humboldt Redwoods State Park/Weott
Redwood National Park/ Orick
Redwood State Park/Prarie Creek
Redwood National Park/Del Norte
Redwood State Park/Del Norte Coast
Jebediah Smith Redwoods/Crescent City

Also-any lodging ideas nearby?
Is Trinidad a good areato stay?
Is Eureka worth visiting?

Thanks in advance!

The drive along the Avenue of the Giants is a favorite, as this area, which is adjacent to the Humbolt Redwoods State Park, as I recall, has the world's highest trees. It's been a very long time since I was in Eureka, but in the past it really wasn't a great stop, except for an overnight corporate hotel stay. However, it's quit possible that the downtown and revitalized itself by now. The landscape in all these areas is good, but the nature of the logging business and abandoned Fortuna mill town look may not be so pleasing in some areas. Consider Arcata as well as Trinidad for villages with pleasant restaurants and coffeeshops, and a place to stay.

Thanks Atufft. I just heard from somewhere else that Humboldt Redwoods State Park was not to be missed, though I'm sure all the parks are worthwhile.

I will look into Arcata, though I was assuming it would be full of college students.

    Thanks again.

    Check out this link:

Places where college students hang out, near the college or university, are generally not bad places to go. The college professors and other faculty members working at the college demand and pay for better restaurants and night life than lumberjacks and farmers are likely to.

I recommend Prarie Creek and Fern Canyon in particluar. But my hands down favorite beach (including redwood trees) is Trinidad State Beach.

Thanks for the link Atufft. Interesting point about the positive college influence-that makes sense. (I have just seen too much Spring Break/Campus Kids Gone Wild imagery recently.)

Oh! I know. College kids on vacation can be wild, but you won't likely find that there. On the other hand, as mentioned earlier Trinidad does look like a good idea to me.

We were in old town Eureka about two years ago and they've done a lovely job of making a nice shopping area that is pedsestrian friendly. For more information about that whole area try http://www.redwoodvisitor.org/
