Does anyone know the history of the stone quarries in the mountains near the large Buddah in Hota-Kanaya? any info would be appreciated!! Thank you!
Actually I didn't know anything about the buddhas or the quarries, so I tried a little web research. Apparently these quarries yielded welded-tuff known as "Boshu-ishi", which was well-regarded as building material and even used in the construction of the Edo Castle, as well as the buddhas you saw. (Boshu is an ancient name for the peninsular part of Chiba.) The quarries were active during the Edo and Meiji period, and according to one web site there was some activity even as late as 1982. Another web site says there is an informational display about Edo-period quarrying practices in one of the ropeway stations on Nokogiri-yama.
