Is it hard to get around in Hong Kong if you only speak english. Is it expensive to eat, travel, find lodging?
HK is very easy to get around if you only speak English (it was once ruled by the British so most things are written in cantonese/mandarin and English). The subway system is all in English as well as cantonese and very easy to navigate. Transport is very cheap too, it costs about HK$2 for the trams and the subway varies but shouldn't cost more than HK$4 I think. Lodging can be expensive unless you're willing to sleep in Chung King mansions (which I really wouldn't recommend!). Food is relatively cheap too. However, I don't know which country you're coming from because if you convert it to GPB or USD then it's cheap but it's certainly not the cheapest place in Asia

Hong Kong has excellent very easy to use public transport. Station names are in English on the MTR(underground). Announcements are made in Cantonese and English on the MTR. Buses, minibuses have their destinations in English. You will have no difficulty at all getting around by public transport without knowing Chinese. For public transport you can pay with the correct money per trip or buy a stored value card called an octopus card. This can be used on the MTR, buses, minibuses, ferries and you can add value to it if you start to run low. Accomodation is generally quite expensive. Food comes in all price ranges. You'll pay very little in a fast food resturant or eating local food in a Dai Pai Dong. You'll pay reasonable prices for food in most international restaurants, but the alcohol can be pricey and you'll pay a lot if you go to a fancy restaurant. Alcohol (beer, wine) by the way is very cheap from supermarkets or convenience stores.

NO, you can go around hongkong even you don't talk or ask directions from locals, just have a city/subway map (available at the airport) and you can explore Hong Kong with your own. and most of locals understand and speak english since they are british colony before. Foods and lodging are just average, not cheap or not expensive. just spend money within your budget. :) happpy trip:)

The only people I have trouble communicating with are taxi drivers. I take taxis occasionally but find it very useful to have the destination written in Cantonese. As explained by Irene, the MTR system is very user friendly. When you arrive at your destination station the exit you need to use is clearly marked in English. Hong Kong has thousands of restaurants and street food stalls catering for all tastes and budgets. For a cheaper option McDonalds, KFC etc are everywhere along with bakeries, noodle and sushi bars etc. The YMCA in Salisbury Rd Kowloon may be a good option for you. This hotel is extremely popular both for its location and value for money. * A tram fare is now HK$2.30. Exact coins are required or you can use an Octopus card.

Yes HK is an easy city to get around. I remember hearing that the number of Aussies living in HK is around 55,000 so there are plenty of English speakers in HK and it is like being in Chinatown in a Western city. You should have no problems at all getting around.

Most speak English unless they are more older maybe around 40-50+...(assuming so, as all of my family in HK that ages don't know a word in English. Travelling around is also very easy as most places have English and Chinese road names. The only problem I found hard there was even though my family are from there was going to authentic street stalls and ordering food... some (not all) have menus only in Chinese.. unless you ask for recommendations etc.

It's very easy to get around in HK. Transport is not expensive. I think around HK$5-10/trip if you take MTR. Foods are expensive for fine dining, but you can also find the foods in very cheap price. You may go to web site "www.openrice.com" for some ideas. This is the most popular web site in HK. About lodging, since I'm living in HK, I have no idea about it. If you still think that it's difficult to get around in HK, I can be your tour guide during my leasure time(e.g. Sat/Sun). My service is free of charge, because I want to making friends in the world and practice my English.
