Brief side trip from Hong Kong in August. Destination suggestions?

by kayleeandchase Online Now Mar 22, 2012 at 3:36 PM

Cliff Notes: Wife and I are traveling to Hong Kong in August and want to take a 4-5 days to do a side trip somewhere relatively close and CHEAP, but more "exotic". Looking for advice. Long Version: My wife and I are going to Hong Kong on business in August. We have about 3-4 days of work there, but we figured if we have to fly halfway across the globe we might as well take it all in. The way everything worked out with airline tickets (already purchased) and the other obligations we have while there we have about 10 "free days" in Hong Kong. (6 days before business and 4 days after). After we started doing some research we started to feel like 10 days in HK might be more than we need to see/do the things we really want to do. So now we're thinking about using a portion of those 6 straight "free days" to take a side trip from HK. (probably only 4-5 days so that we give ourselves some travel buffer room) But to where? Relevant info about us. We aren't really "city people". Prefer outdoors and other physical activities. Although we're exciting about visiting such an impressive city, we generally get more excited about taking a hike through an exotic forest or snorkeling above a reef than shopping, going to a club, or seeing the "city sights". After a few days in a big city we both start to get a little antsy. So where could we go for just a few days and see and experience something very unique without getting totally rained out, flying too far, or spending too much? ---- At first we looked at Phuket and Phi Phi island. Because they seemed to offer what we're after. (Not too far, pretty CHEAP, and plenty of "exotic wonders") But after some more research we became concerned that it might just rain the entire time. We're from Florida, so heat and a few thunderstorms don't bother us, we just don't want to have a high probability that we'll experience rain during our entire side trip. Any input on Phuket in August would be welcome. It seems like the rain might not be too bad...but if the seas are rough the whole time would that ruin any trips to islands? We've started to look into Indonesia, but the flights there are a little more pricey and longer and it will be during Ramadan, which we've heard can be kinda a bummer while traveling. Philippines would be right in the middle of typhoon season. Other places of interest Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan.....and many more. Just need to narrow it down. Any and all input welcome.

How about Bali? Most of the locals are Hindu and the weather is great over there. The gulf side of Thailand (eg. Ko Samui) will be a good choice in terms of weather as well.

Visit Puerto Princesa, Palawan in the Philippines. Check out Cebupacificair for cheap flights/promomfairs. Palawan is out of the typhoon belt but every few years we do get a blustery storm. Airasia have a promo now, also check out www.cebupacificair.com www.airphilexpress.com www.philippineairlines.com www.zestair? www.airasia .com Check every day for a month and i am sure you will find something. Why i suggest Puerto Princesa? The underground river, one of the new 7 natural wonders of the world, good for hiking through the park, good beach for swimming, just what you like. Also Puerto Princesa is known as the city in the jungle, good restaurants and many things to see, check my home page out and see all the things to do.

You could also pick some places in China. But keep in mind it will be HOT! HOT and humid in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore... Hot in China. If you do choose China, you must get a visa to get out of Hong Kong.

Being from Florida ourselves and having done the similar trip I can sympathize with your fears and yes, I'm afraid that August you will indeed encounter much more chance of rains as we do here in South Florida - if not more. The heat also is quite oppressive. We've always for that reason, traveled in June. Agree that the other side of Thailand might be a bit better and Bali of course is ideal however, as you have noted, getting there requires much more time as well as being more expensive. Having said that, whenever we fly out of Bali and back to the states it is always via Hong Kong and very doable - albeit, longer trip.
